Your system is set to "Announce" instead of "Answer". Since you neglected to specify the model of your VTech answering system I can only suggest you enter it into the search box here to download a copy of the manual to learn how to switch the mode.

Answering system doesn't work.

Your system is set to "Announce" mode, where it plays an announcement but does not record a message. You want "Answer" mode, where the system allows the caller to leave a message.

Since you didn't give the model of your VTech system, I can't tell you how to switch modes. Enter the model into the search box at http://www.vtechphones.com/support/general/manuals to download a copy of the manual.

How do I program the machine to record messages? My message plays, but there is no record of my recording when I leave a message?

You have announce set to on, where callers can hear your message but cannot leave one of their own.

The instructions for changing this are on page 28 of the manual at
http://vt.vtp-media.com/ecp/documents/product_Product/69/UserManual/1639/ia5854_manual_bkm.pdf

I need to change the message and do not remember how on my Lucent Tech. 1710 machine. How do I do it?

Hi you can try these steps: An answering machine is a device which will answer the phone on your behalf after a certain number of rings. It will play a recorded message for your callers before it is ready to record their message. You can use the manufacturer's preset automated message or you can change it by recording your own outgoing message.

  • Compose your message ahead of time. If not, you may end up stumbling, looking for the right words while you are recording your message or leaving out some important details. Composing your message before you begin recording will save you from having to record several messages before you find one with which you are satisfied.
  • Step 2Make it easy for your callers to listen your message. Record your message in a relatively quiet room without background noise. Speak loudly and clearly. For the benefit of callers who don't have much time, make your message as brief and to the point as possible.

The pre recorded message on the answering machine has been lost.

I read thru the manual. There is nothing bout recovery of factory messages. If you recorded your own, try deleting it. Or unplug the base from power and try a reset. This is from the manual. At the end, I gave you a link to the manual!

    Using a pre-recorded greeting
    message
If you erase or do not record your own
greeting message, the unit plays a prerecorded
    greeting message for callers
and asks them to leave messages. If the
message recording time (page 39) is set
    to “Greeting only”, caller messages
are not recorded and the unit plays a
    different pre-recorded greeting message
    asking callers to call again.
