I have a Frigidaire Gallery washing machine, model GLWS1349AS1, purchase in 2002. At approximately year 5 I would see occassional residue left in the bottom of tub, it was grey colored and slimy. When it became more prevelant, I stopped by the store where we purchase it and asked their repair department about it. He asked if we have a water softner, which we do, and he said it sounded like I was using too much detergent and it was excess detergent building up, in hoses, tub etc. He advised me to use toilet bowl cleaner, and run through a couple of cycles. No improvement seen. I have done this at least twice in the last year, have even tried white vinegar. It is becoming worse. I have reduced the amount of detergent used (liquid Tide) to a very small amount, but the problem persists and if I don't catch it, it gets baked into the fabric when tossed into the dryer.
What is the problem - what is the solution (other than buying a new machine)?
I posted this for someone with a similar complaint:
You can try a product called Affresh it's supposed to work quite well to maintian a clean washer. If you already have a smelly washer you should run a few cycles using Affresh. You also want to make sure you're using HE soap (it will have an HE oval shaped logo on the detergent bottle). If you're not soap residue will build up in the machine and start to smell.
