The fault is with its Laser Picku Unit itself. The sled motor, the motor that spins the disc inside the DVD player, should wok like this as you details here. Just see, when we put in a disc inside any disc player, it will sart spins, after it has been loaded properly into the mechanism. The the laser pickup unit will start scan the recording on the disc, reads it; recogonize its contents, then starts to play from the first track. This is an automatic process ot all disc players, and suring this reading process, the spin speed of the disc will vary, may stop, or rewind to a little and then spins again. This is a common process to all the playeres.
Here, with your DVD player, the laser pickup unit tries to read the tracks, but fails, the again it starts to readit, fails and finally show a 'No Disc' display, as it hasn't got any details about the recoding at the inserted disc.
There are three main causes for this fault. The first one is with a faulty strip wire. This wire is one, that connects the laser pickup unit with main board. You can see a flat ribbon type cable that connectes to laser pickup unit at the mechanism, to the main circuit board of the player. Replace this cable fist. This cable can be purchased from most of the electronic spare part shops at your town, and won't cost more.
The second chance is with dirty or dusty laser pickup unit lens. To cclean this lens, the easisest way is to put in a lens cleaning disc into the unit, play it for at least three times, by ejecting it out and get it into. This process will clean up any dirt or dust accululated on the lens, and will help you. The cleaning disc also can be bought from most of the electronic spare part selling shops at your town.
The third chance is with a faulty Laser Pickup Unit istsef. If so, there is no repair to this unit other than replacing it with same type and number. It is a skilled work, and you have to disassemeble and reassemble the deck mechanism. If you have experience to dothis, you can do it by yourself at home Ok

The player used to have to 'warm up' before playing a DVD. Now it will try to play it for a while before displaying "no disc"
If I remove the DVD and put it in my laptop, it plays fine.
How can I troubleshoot further and/or fix it? I have a feeling it's the motor because it spins up, then stops, spins up then stops, spins up then stops. It won't stay spun up for some reason.
I've sinned in the past by opening the DVD door and pulling the DVD out before it stops all the way, by stopping the DVD with my finger. That probably jacked the player up.
