This indicates a short in one of the speakers, or possibly the speakers are not wired correctly. Please see my tip at http://www.fixya.com/support/r9389300-stereo_says_protect_or_clicks_off_when .
Correct wiring for 95 Corolla is as follows:

1995 Toyota Corolla Wiring harness, Kenwood wire color
Radio Constant 12V+ Wire: Blue/Yellow, yellow
Radio Switched 12V+ Wire: Gray, red

Radio Illumination Wire: Green, not used by Kenwood--please tape off
Radio Antenna Trigger Wire: Black/Red, blue
Left Front Speaker Wire (+): Pink, white
Left Front Speaker Wire (-): Purple, white/black
Right Front Speaker Wire (+): Light Green, gray
Right Front Speaker Wire (-): Blue, gray/black
Left Rear Speaker Wire (+): Black, green
Left Rear Speaker Wire (-): Yellow, green/black
Right Rear Speaker Wire (+): Red, purple
Right Rear Speaker Wire (-): White , purple/black

My KDC BT742U recently went into protect mode after I went over a small bump. I drive a 2001 F150 Supercrew that had the stock stereo in it before the new kenwood. No problems had ever occurred before...

What has happened, is the bump has caused a broken joint on the pcb I have seen this many times in my shop. You need to take the actual unit in for repair, I mean the "Bump" and the "Problem" are indeed connected, and this is exactly what happens.

Security Code for Protect mode

Turn on the car so the radio is flashing "Protect." Look on the front / removable face of the stereo. On it you will find a small round hole - that's a reset button. Find a small paper clip, unfold the clip and stick it gently into the hole. The "Protect" will stop flashing, and Kenwood will be displayed. Unfortunately all your settings/presets will be gone, but at least the stereo is working again!
