My grandson's leap pad explorer now has a black screen. The Leap Pad Explorer will not turn on after installing the Leap Pad connect via the internet, installed the purchased Duracell rechargeable batteries, installed the 4 "Free Apps" from the leapPad connect sight. NOTE: LeapPad Explorer was working super before installing the 4 "Free additional apps" from the leapPad connect web sight. After installing the LeapPad Connect with included CD, installing the 4 "Free Apps", we briefly noticed a white screen with 2 or three very small color bars through it, after this appeared it was lights out and just a black screen. LeapPad Explorer still will not turn on even with brand new Duracell batteries installed. We have contacted LeapPad through the telephone # 1-800-you are screwed. After holding for almost one hour, we connect with a foreign speaking woman who speaks broken English "At Best"! We truly hope no one else runs into this issue as we have happened to be held up with a broken product made by a broken company! We are VERY displeased by there response of us having to wait at least 3 full business weeks for another replacement of which I have heard on the internet as being a used LeapPad Explorer and broken as well. We all need to stand together when these instances occur to let these company's become responsible for there actions of sending out broken toy's for good girls & boy's waiting patiently for there Christmas gifts. I was very concerned at first about ordering online, now I know why! If anyone else has this issue and knows how we should proceed to fix this brand new right out of the box leapPad Explorer, please share this news if you will. My son dropped his, on our soft carpeted floor and now nothing happens. Can't get it to work. this is ridiculous. this is a child's toy for goodness sake it should withstand a bit of abuse, and this was not abuse by any means. I bought it this summer and am frustrated with this...sounds like others are too.

Wow! Having the same problem. Worked great prior to downloading the apps. I also called the 800 number and we are waiting for a fix...Looks like we will not get one. If by some miracle we get a fix I will definetly pass it on.
now you have me worried. this happened to my daughters just as you described. i thought it was the batteries going so i changed them. will keep an eye on it and will contact leapfrog support. will post something here again if i get any joy. thanks for making me aware!

We apologize for the inconvenience you are experiencing right now.
There are a number of possible reasons your toy may have stopped working.
Trying NEW non-rechargeable batteries is the quickest fix.
Note: Please make sure you are trying new batteries. Once found around your home will have power levels that are not the same and make the product not work correctly.
Note: Make sure that the batteries are installed the correct way. All of our product have a picture inside the battery compartment showing which way the batteries need to be installed. In the case of the Tag Reading System, both batteries face the same way.
Troubleshooting Step:
Sometimes it helps to clean the battery compartment with a dry cotton swab or cloth. Rub the gold contacts inside the battery compartment to release any dust or film. You can also use an eraser to 'erase' and clean the contacts.
Once you have cleaned the contacts, please make sure to install new non-rechargeable batteries before turning your unit on.
If the above recommendations will not help, please let us know.
thanks Celeste but to test that theory i have had the leappad connected to a 9v AC adaptor and have been playing it myself and guess what! white screeen with coloured lines. that kinda blows their theory out of the window-did they really think it would be so simple.i have emailed them and their reply said it may take up to 3 days for a response so if i hear anything more enlightening then i will let you know. in the meantime my leappad is going back to santas elves where i am sure they have a better solution than leappad. happy new year to you all.slan

My response to Leap Frog.........
I wish it was easy to fix this problem. I have tried what you suggested...still not fixed. I have also tried to connect it with a 9v AC adaptor and have been playing it myself and guess what....white screen with colored lines. Sorry but try again. Like I said before everything was fine until I downloaded the 4 free apps....maybe you should check your programming.
This has started happening to my sons leappad. In my case i have also noted that when it happens (the small lines or the black screen), i place my thumbs on two of the opposite green corners and apply slight pressure - the game starts playing as if nothing is wrong. This seems to indicate that there is a loose connection...
Not sure what else to do - but i have asked my supplier for advice as my son is completely guttered that his toy is broken

1) Open the LeapFrog Connect application, turn on the LeapPad and connect it on your computer.
2) Click on the Settings tab, LeapPad Explorer and then click Repair
If that doesn't fix it, connect again and click Settings > LeapPad Explorer > Reset
Note, when you initially connect the Repair/Reset buttons may be grayed out. It may take a couple minutes for all updates to download and the LeapPad to fully connect before these buttons are clickable.
Provide us with a full name, shipping address, phone number, place and date of purchase along with the alphanumeric codes engraved or stamped on the battery compartment of the product. We will enter this information into oursystem and we will get back to you.

Same thing happened to my daughter. She used it one day, only one day. I got it from Walmart with the $6.00 protection plan, I took it back. But good luck on finding any right now. So she now has nothing!!! We tried everything that they suggested and nothing.
Kinda sad that a toy company like Leapfrog will not help customers with there faulty broken toy's thousands of good girls & boy's expect to play with after opening on christmas day!
They are only concerned with taking peoples money and laughing at us when we want a replacement toy which we payed over $200 U.S. Bankrupt dollars for!

Same thing is happening to my son's leappad that he received in Dec 2012. So frustrating that the same problem is still around.
I truely can not complain about leapfrog. I had to be pesistant and contact their offices in California not their customer service 800 number ( which is no where near helpful). After numerous phone calls I did recieve a new LeapPad for my son ( even if it's purple - not complaining ).
i was to go out an buy this product in the store...which i will not 15% would barely take care of the tax on the new device. We not only own the Leap Pad but we also have the Leapster Explorer. When there is not a service center to repair these expensive devices the least you could do if offer a better warranty. I will not purchase any more games, accessiores, or devices if this is the end result and the quality of service that this company stands for. If i could take it somewhere to get it repaired i would...instead you suggest that i buy a new unit...at your "wonderful" discounted price of %15 off. This is ridiculous and unacceptable. Like i stated in the previous email i know from the online forum (Fixya.com) that a one time replacement has been given to numerous people. I bought this for my son on his third birthday in June 2012. He also received the Leapster at the same time. SO this literally at in the box at the top of his closet for six months. When we did take it out of the box he played with it a handful of times. He was still too little to really know what to do. Only the last couple of months has it really gotten used regularly. Can you tell me when we registered the product online. We used this email do to that so you should be able to tell me when that took place. That would be the same time we finally took it out of the closet and the box. With this kind of warranty I now plan to go on the Leap Frog website and Amazon and any other website where these products are sold and warn potential buyers of the lack of repair options and no replacement option for the products they purchase from your company. I will NEVER buy another device, game ANYTHING from Leap Frog again. I will spend my money on a Naby or a Kindle Fire for my son. LeapPad 2 Explorer keeps shutting itself off while playing. The device also turns on and off when it is off or charging. The only way to stop this is to take out one battery
