My daughter's leappad won't let her play. It just shows the screen that prompts you to connect to the computer. When I connect it to the computer it says tuning up but it stops at 5 % and eventually freezes.
This toy sucks. I've had a really crappy year, but three months ago I had a good month and had a little extra to spare so I decided to buy, for Christmas the Leappads my two daughters had been asking for since last year's Christmas.
All good? NO! After being very excited and seeing the happiness on my two little girls's faces when they saw their gifts I was very happy with the way this year was ending. Until it came time to get a few "apps" and connect to the internet etc. with these things. Nothing works, no updates, no registrations, nothing. To add insult to injury, I've my proof of purchase for these two items has been lost and I now have to sit my two little kids down tomorrow to let them know that their "dream gifts" are useless and may remain that way for the foreseeable future. I've plugged a lot of stuff into my computer and have never had any problems, until this little kid's toy came along and nothing works.
Way to go LeapFrog. I followed your instructions and am now stuck with two absolutely useless toys after spending the bulk of my Christmas day trying to get these stupid things to work!!!
OK, I've managed, after around 7hrs to get these things working. It appears that letting them "hang" at 5%, 35%, 40% & 80% seems to be the thing to do. Then get them reset and it should work. I'd have expected a kid's toy to 1. Work out of the box 2. To be a little easier to get working from the start.
OK, this problem appears to be related to Kaspersky Anti-Virus software. Since installing these toys I've had a few problems doing the daily updates. I read somewhere that Kaspersky had a problem with this software and the toys, so, before I connected the toys, I disabled Kaspersky protection and what do you know, it's all perfect. Just remember to reactivate protection when done.

The problem is not with running it as administrator! Here's the issue in a nutshell:
You connect your leap pad. You get the device connected sound. It AUTOMATICALLY starts connect (If it is not running) and starts the download. At the 5% mark (For me.. sometimes 3%) the device DISCONNECT sound happens, and then it reconnects again. But by this point, the Leap Frog connect program sees it as disconnected and there nothing left to do. I've tried every USB port and same issue. I would think it's my computer but every other device I own works without issue(EXCEPT FOR MY OTHER LEAP FROG PRODUCT LEAPSTER 2!).
In a word - this sucks. The Leap Pad 2 is now NOT WORKING, my daughter is CRYING and the brainiacs at Leap Frog think all parents have time M-F during REGULAR BUSINESS HOURS ONLY to talk to customer support about issues like this! REALLY? No evening or Saturday hours for parents that both work??????
This worked for meTroubleshooting the Leappad
Installation of Leapfrog Connect
It would be best if you download the Leapfrog connect software from their site instead of installing from the CD. This is because the CD may not have the latest updates, so downloading from the site would be best.
LeapFrog connect is having trouble communicating with your handheld device
If you have installed the LeapFrog connect software and you're still getting "LeapFrog connect is having trouble communicating with your handheld device. Please turn your leap pad off and on again. If you continue to experience problems you may need to check your firewall settings", try the following:
I reinstalled the Leappad connect software in Explorer rather than Firefox, which seemed to mean no error messages, then let the update run for ages. It did stick at 5% and 35%, but eventually moved on. All in all it took about 2 hours for the update to run, then the Leappad 2 did work. Which is not good considering this was straight out of the box. Fortunately I have a very patient little girl. All I can advise is let it run for ages and with a bit of luck it will get there in the end.
Hi all - I just purchased one of these for my daughter, for xmas ... turned it on, then it stuck on 5%.
This is how I got it to work (my OS is Win7 pro 64bit)
Open the file directory when the app installs ("C:\Program Files (x86)\LeapFrog\LeapFrog Connect\LeapFrogConnect.exe")
Right mouse click the "LeapFrogConnect.exe
Select "properties"
Select "Compatability" tab
At the bottom there is an option for "Run this program as an administrator"
I ticked this option, reconnected the Leapfrog and .... it updated and "repaired" (considering that I only took it out the package 30 mins ago - god knows why it needed to be repaired)
So, basically, the issue lies with how the program starts (it opens automatically when the connect the Leapfrog),
Hope this helps someone.
After several hours of trying every proposed solution I could find online, what finally worked for me was disabling my Kaspersky Anti-virus program. Not sure if it was a fluke, but it didn't seem to work at first. After disabling the anti-virus and letting the LeapPad 2 sit in that endless cycle where it hits 5%, then disconnects, all of a sudden, after 15 minutes or so, it passed 5%, the 50%, then 80%. It took nearly 30 minutes in all, but it updated and I got a message on the screen saying that the device was updated/fixed and ready to use. Glad it is working now, but that doesn't change the fact that it was a long, frustrating, annoying process of trial and error. Seems like WAY to many LeapPad owners have this same issue. Leap needs to make appropriate fixes, and soon!
Hi guys.. I just bought LeapPad2 today and encountered problem on synching and tune up. it stuck on 5%....... I tried to disconnect the cable , turn on and off the LeapPad and my Laptop but still same problem encountered.... Then I found out that my only problem is my ANTIVIRUS.. so I tried to disable my KASPERSKY...then my problem solved!.. the LeapPad finished its sync and tune up.
I had the same issue with my son's LeapPad 2, and running the LeapFrog Connect application as adminitrator seems to have remedied the problem.
It seemed like it was going to hang on the tuneup again, but it's just a bit of a slow process I guess, it worked out fine. I hope this works for you and anyone else as well.
How do you run it as an administrator?
Right-click the icon and choose "Run as administrator". Should be the second option.
I tried running as admin and we are still stuck at 5% , how long did it take to tune yours?
I ran as admin and no luck, still stuck at 5% . How long did it take you to tune yours?
Any fix discovered for this yet? My son's patience have started to run thin! Thanks!
Any luck with a fix yet?
I messaged leapfrog and they told me it's a program called Nvidia on my computer that's causing the problem. No fixes yet.
ny oriblem is i have 800 in games on my daughters leap pad and to reset means i throw 800 dollars down the drain not to mention the 200 i paid for it so now im in about 1000 dollars. none of the above are working ive gona through 4 sets of batteries with it being stuck at 35% =(

Mine stayed at 5% for about 20 minutes, with many connect and disconnect sound, but it did eventually go through. You have to be VERY patient with this process.
I had a similar problem. The device would request a Tune Up upon powering on. I would connect, Tune Up started and would stop at 5% and stay there indefinitely. It looked like it failed trying to update firmware based on the Connect logfile.
Contacted LeapFrog Support and they sent this link below. This procedure fixed the problem, updated the firmware and fixed the issue for me. There was no firewall/antivirus software running at any time and the LeapPad1 was recognized so the reference page wasn't intuitively for my problem but still fixed the issue.
LeapPad1 or Leapster Explorer not recognized by my computer
Select "Screen Calibration" using the directional pad and then press "Right" on the directional pad. You'll be taken to a screen with a handful of "+" signs located on it.
Tap the center of each "+" sign with the stylus that came with your device to calibrate your LeapPad 2. After tapping the last "+" sign, the LeapPad 2 will be calibrated.
So here was my fix for the 5% freeze. I did find the answer on the Leap Pad 2 help page. I'm using the Kaspersky Antivirus. It seems to have been causing the problem. I added the two programs Leapfrog needed to the exceptions list and the upadte and sync finally went all the way. One other problem I had was that the LP had lost my childs name and sync could not finish until I unplugged the LP and redid the initial setup. Goodluck.
After an hour or so of frustration and attempting all the solutions found (after a wide sweep of many solution sites on the WWW) I tried disabling firewall and running as administrator AND a complete uninstall/reinstall - to no avail.
I then rang theLeapfrog UK helpdesk. Within seconds I got through and a vey nice man apologised and said I would have to disable ALL internet security I had (firewall and all) and then try again. I have kaspersky so I could disable all with one click. 10 Minutes later leappad2 update complete and kaspersky re-enabled. Simple and easily resolved. I hope this is helpful.
Hi Everyone - I had the exact same problem, that yellow triangle with the black exclamation mark in it and everytime I tried to fix it with the LeapFrog Connect, it hung at either 5%, 6% or 35%. I searched the internet in vain and tried all sorts of fixes, including turning off firewalls, anti-virus, reinstalling the LeapFrog Connect etc etc, nothing worked! So after 10 hours of failure, I rang LeapFrog and they gave me a fix to try: *NB - WARNING: THIS FIX COMPLETELY RESETS YOUR LEAPPAD - EVERYTHING WILL BE WIPED! ONLY ATTEMPT AS A LAST RESORT!!
"Can you please follow the steps below to resolve the issue that you are currently experiencing:
To do a reset of the product:
1. Launch the LeapFrog Connect application
2. Press and hold down on the keyboard Ctrl + Shift + R at the same time
3. A pop up window will prompt you to connect the device you wish to reset
4. Power on and connect the LeapPad
This will then start a complete reset of your device which can take up to 30/40 mins."
I tried this 3 or 4 times - and it still didnt work, so rang LeapFrog the following day and they told me to send it back with a quick covering letter and a proof of purchase (device was only 6 months old, purchased new from Amazon) - which I did and I got a new one back in 5 days!!!
Credit where its due, LeapFrog were really helpful and replaced the faulty LeapPad, no questions asked (as long as you have the proof of purchase and that covering letter) in what I think is an amazing timeframe. Hope this helps everyone to what is a really frustrating problem, especially when your little ones are bawling their eyes out.
Same problem here tho mine goes to 35% gone thr no end of batteries tryin to set up its driving me mad.

I have the same problem ,but i don't have kaspersky anti-virus but AVG .Till now i can't solve this problem.CAN YOU HELP PLEASE THANKS
I think that most Anti-Viruses would stop this program so all you will need to do is disable it and then enable is when it has finished. Works fine now.
