There are Center Speakers, Surround Speakers[L&R] and Front speakers[L&R]. Which amoung this show fault? Please clarify more about your Amps' problem.

You can take the box to your nearest Comcast office and swap it out st the front counter for free. If it is indeed the box malfunctioning, this will get your service working again without having to pay for a service call.

DVD's: does it display any kind of error? All DVD's?

To your second question.

The manual explains cable and TV hookup for CABLE but there is no mention of off-air TV tuning.

U HAVE TO HAVE IT ACTIVATED BY YOUR LOCAL CABLE COMPANY ASK 2 SPEAK WITH A MANAGER

It takes registration of the unit to receive them and it would be unethical and illegal to post a way to hack them here...

The clear protective film on the DCP501 display must be removed and transferred to the inside back cover of your
DCP501 Home Theater System User Guide. The Unit Address and Serial Number found on the protective film is
required for activation of your DCP501 cable TV receiver by your cable TV service provider.

look for a reset button on your device to become default again what your son have done.
