Last week one of the three dividers inside the drum snapped off, tearing a few items of clothes during the cycle. I replaced this part and 3 days later the other two parts also snapped off during a wash. I am not overloading the drum but was wondering whether this was a common problem or whether there is some other aspect which needs fixing which is causing this problem?

I would agree with your initial diagnosis that it is the main drum bearings that is the source of the noise.,
try and spin the drum by hand, if it feels rough, or grinding then it is the bearings, also try lifting the drum up and down, if you can feel movement, again it confirms bearing failure..
If you are not sure, remove the belt and try it again, this is done from the rear, remove the lower panel and slip belt off. this will give you the opportunity to make sure the noise is not from the motor.
If the bearings have gone, it is a major repair, and I would not recommend a DIY repair, as it is a complete strip down.
If the m/c is less than 5 years old, you may be able to get it put right under the Hotpoint 5 year part guarantee, you pay for labour, about £90.00, you would have to check with Hotpoint.

sound like the contact points on the timer are probebly dirty or arched to where they are not making good contact. you can take and clean them with a piece of emery cloth if you are mechanically inclined and can take the timer apart. Also there's a set of contacts down by the motor ti check too.

To fit new paddle,line up the lugs on the paddle in the slots in the drum, and push firmly with both hands towards the rear of the drum, you should feel it click into place, make sure you fit it the correct way round.

The same thing happened with my Indesit WD1. I now use a flathead screwdriver to open the door. There's a horizontal ****, about an inch high between the lever and the door (sorry, this is hard to describe). If you insert the screwdriver in the gap as far as it will go (at about a 45 degree angle to the door), then gently press the handle of the screwdriver towards the machine, you should feel the door release.
