Take it loose from the faucet and flip the lever down on the filter in the on position. Take the cap off and remove the filter. Blow hard through it. You should hear a whirling noise of a gear, like a windmill. If not, I use a water dental pic to pulsate into it and clean it out. This is what makes the light work and when flow goes down, the light changes color. It's all mechanical. No battery. Just free up the gear so it turns freely to work the light. If standing in front of a mirror, you can actually see the light come on. PUR doesn't tell you this because they want you to purchase another one.

I tried placing a straw in the hole on the inside of my unit and blowing hard several times. Sure enough, the green light is now working.

Great advice!! I tried this and now the light works again. I called Pur first and they said that the battery was dead and I needed to buy a new filter.

I can hear the gismo whirring when I blow on it but the light is still red, with or without the cartridge. Now what? buy a new one?

Thank you so much! I actually didn't even have to go through all of the steps. After just removing the cap and filter, I noticed that the filter was not installed properly (and it was when I first installed it a few weeks ago, so I'm not sure how it moved). I just pulled it out, flipped the switch down to let the remaining water out, reinstalled the filter and cap, and - VOILA! All fixed here. Great information for future reference though. Thank you, Kathy!

Also, has anyone else has noticed the white crumb-like debris when opening a brand new filter? I called Pur and they told me this is normal, and that I should always run a new filter for 5 minutes before using it. I never did that before, but this time I tasted a sip of the water before I ran it through for 5 minutes and it had a funky taste (plastic?), and it was actually slimy, even on my hands. Now I always wash off the filter before installing, I wonder if that stuff is silica, eww ??

I tried the blowing of the filter. I installed a new filter. I saw the green light flash as I closed the top proving the mechanism is working. I clip onto faucet. Run the filter for the recommended 5 minutes. Light does not work at all. Its less than a year old and it did used to work.

Try using a little vinegar to clean. I believe hard water deposits clog the wheel. You should hear the wheel spinning/whirring when you blow.

Thanks! That did the trick. I used a pointed skewer to move the wheel. It was stuck. Now it works fine..

Even though I heard the whirring sound, still no light... Any other ideas?

  • Anonymous Jul 23, 2018

I blew hard and heard the whirring sound. Did it twice but it worked for only the first time after I put it back. I then take my new filter out, press the black hole firmly (let as little water out as possible) inside the unit housing and turn on the water to create pressure as if the filter is in the unit. Turn on and off the water several time. Finally, the light on every time I turn on my Pur filter.

Got a new PUR Faucet device. Light was not working. I did the way you described and it worked. Now everytime I start my tap water, Light blinks for initial few seconds and then goes off. Thanks a ton. :)

Different water supplies have varying amounts of minerals and sediment. This can cause problems.
I cleaned mine using sanitizer from a home-brew store. Works great!
You could alternatively soak your empty faucet in a mixture of cold water and white vinegar. 50-50. This will pull out dirt and any micro mould spores that end up growing in the hidden places. This should be done at least once a year. Twice is better.
Also, while empty, take out the little sieve plate, which is the last thing the water goes through and soak that in white vinegar. Then run water from the faucet through the hole, reverse flow if you will and this will also help to remove any trapped sediment and help it to work better.

I've read all comments did a few. I've had my Pur for about 7 years an now the light is out. So I guess it's about time to upgrade. Don't want to be drinking bad water.

Light now works, but it’s green, despite the filter’s being close to needing replacement.

Only removes very little chlorine that's in our water. Better off throwing it away and replace it with a reverse osmosis. if you're looking for clean water

SOURCE: Unable to loosen and unscrew kitchen faucet screen...

If you have a lime problem, try soaking the tip in boiling water with vineger added to it. The acetic acid in the vineger disolves the lime. I did it just last week when I serviced my kitchen faucet. It may take quite a while for the lime to disolve, but in the end you will achieve your goal.

How do you fix the light in a Pur faucet filter

It could be mineralized, try soaking it in vinegar or scale remover.

Low Water pressure from the unfiltered spout on the Pur wat?r filter rf-9999. Plenty of pressure in the line.

Check out the nozzle screen for clogging. And if that does not do it then the cartridge inside your faucet is not operating properly. And those cartridges can usually be replaced. If faucet is a Moen it has a lifetime warranty and all you do is call them and they send to your home a brand new replacement cartridge. Do U have a Moen?

Kitchen faucet purwaterfilter

the light has a battery that 's not replaceable. it wears out and then the light doesn't work any more. you just have to guess when it's time to replace the cartridge. (I got a new filter that i like the color better, after i used the old one for a while after the light ceased working). might be under warranty.

What can be done to repair a leak from a tiny hole on the bottom of PUR water filter?

I am having the same issue. I've just replaced the filter and it started leaking out of this hole, where it never had before.
I am thinking that maybe the filter isn't seated properly, and that's causing the leak. But I have attached a picture of the hole in question. Any advice would be helpful. Thanks!
