If you haven't tried to download the update and failed yet then you haven't felt the burn. These units use batteries so fast that they require new batteries or the ac adapter when updating. If the power fails during any updating process then the internal firmware is trashed and you can try til you are blue in the face and the update will not work. I am dealing with a unit now that that was done to. If this is your situation then. Then here is my suggestion. Get yourself a 5 lb sledge hammer (any hammer will do). Place your VTech Reader on the ground and smash it to bits. Then vow never to buy another of these aggravating pieces of trash. Buy a children's level book and sit down and teach your own child to read.
Usually the manufactures warranty covers material defects for a limited time, and ranges from 90 days to 3 years. I have never seen a warranty for a computer more than 2 years personally, and you bought the computer 8 years ago. Unfortunately I think you will need to pay for the repairs yourself.
You should be able to buy a mouse at any local electronics store like Best Buy, Circuit City, RadioShack, etc. You would connect it through one of your USB ports on your notebook.
Hi i'm Ryan, my daughters did the same thing, I removed the battery cover and there is a small pin hole with a reset button in it, try resetting it. I did and it came back on and works fine.
All you need are 4 AA battery of anykind. Open the back cover, remove the Vtech rechargable battery pack and insert 4 AA batteries in its place. Now your child will enjoy there Vsmile again.
