The camera has brand new batteries, but when I tried to turn on the camera it does not work. After a bit, the camera will turn on but when I try to zoom, it turns off. However the lens is still out and open.

I was having exactly the same issue with my 600EX-RT. This is what solved the problem for me. With the power turned off. Hold down the 2 clear buttons for approximately 5 seconds, then turn the power on and hopefully, you should have a fully operational Flash.
The battery enclosure has a couple metal flaps that make contact with the batteries, try prying it out a tiny bit so the connection is more secure and stops behaving erratically.
I have the same problem... cleaning the contacts does not work. I'm using NiMH 2450 mAmp batteries, brand new, and I get a low battery indicator immediately. Camera shuts off unexpectedly. A short search online indicates that HUNDREDS of people are having the same problem. Kodak help not very helpful. I'm ready to buy something else!
Did you try using the coolpix batteries that came along with the camera? check the ratings on coolpix batteries and compare them to the batteries that you are using now.
A friend of mine had the same prob after putting in brand new batteries, it was i bit wierd but i tried some different batteries and it started working , try some new batteries. hope this helps.
Take the camera apart and put it back together again, making sure that the bit of the shutter that pushes the inner switch is aligned to the inner switch. The inner switch, when pushed and held when the camera is dismantled, will turn the camera on - it's on the front at the bottom. It's fairly straightforward to work out how it's supposed to work - you just need quite a fine screwdriver.
i have just had the same problem. mine was stuck open, i gave the lens a slight twist and heard a bit of a crack. i switched it on again, now it is ok.
