We live in a mobile home.It is 0F outside. The thermostat inside is set for 69.The furnace kicks on and off to maintain a steady temperature throughout the day. The furnace runs in 8 minute cycles....or 12 hours a day. The gas delivery man said that we are using a lot more propane then we should be. Where should we begin to troubleshoot?
You did not indicate the year or size of the mobile home, but, having lived in several in cold Michigan, here are some things.
Be sure all the windows are well sealed.
At first, I used to put a strong clear plastic sheet over the insides, and tape these in place.
Later, I bought foam insulation board at a lumber yard and cut pieces to fin the window openings, and taped them in.
When it is really cold, feel the walls, the floor, and the ceiling.
If you find cold to the touch, you are losing heat there.
If your floors are cold, put insulating panels and skirting around the bottom of the trailer.
If your extreme cold lasts for months, some people consider putting a small electric heater under the trailer that is temperature controlled.
Some people do a "roof-over" by setting poles or posts alongside the trailer and adding an additional roof above the trailer.
That step would enable you to add insulation above the top if your ceiling is cold.

if the heater uses a hot surface igniter its a simple matter of unscrewing the igniter and replacing it with another unit. if it is a spark ignition, the spark wire is a heavy insulated wire that goes to the gap. check out white-rodgers for a replacement. if your furnace uses a purge mode get a purge cycle programmable igniter.

You should be seeing 120 volts to the igniter. Anything less requires either a replacement of the transformer, start relay or control module.

There are a few reasons why your furnace is restarting after it reaches temp. and shuts off. First, if you have a mercury bulb thermostat it needs to be level and the heat anticipator needs set properly. If you have an electronic thermostat then you need to make sure the DIP switch settings inside are set properly for propane. If you have a digital thermostat there are also settings to be made for your type of heating. These settings will be explained in the thermostat installation instructions. Also, Make sure your furnace filter is clean. If this does not help then there are some other things to check which may need to be done by a technician depending on your mechanical aptitude. Is this furnace standing pilot or electronic ignition. If standing pilot i would check furnace filter then the thermastat. To test themostat first turn power off to furnace. Take thermostat off wall and take wires labled R & W and connect them together. If you have electronic ignition I would start with cleaning the flame sensor with steel wool or wire brush.If you have and more questions i will be glad to help.
