Remove Thermocouple - Brinkmann 815-3786-0 Turkey Fryer

  • Anonymous Dec 05, 2011

I bought my fryer in November 2010 and it worked good for that Thanksgiving. Went to use it this year and thermocuople kept shutting off. So I used a brick to kep red button pressed in. What a pain.

After turkey day I removed my thermocouple and installed a direct conection.

I'm not sure about the exact thread size the Brinkman hose end and brass fitting on burner uses. I tried using a 1/16" NPT fitting but it is incorrect. However, I found 8mm threads to be the closet. Use thread sealant and it works great!

I bought a McMaster-Carr p/n 93590A220; Metric 18-8 Stainless Steel Coupling Nut M8 Screw Sz, 1.25mm Pitch, 38mm Length, 16mm Width, $7.95. and used it to connect the hose end to brass fitting on burner.

Yes this is considered a safety risk so modify at your own risk. No one I know of ever walks away druing use.

Where can I find helpful instructions for replacing (removing old and installing new) thermocouple on Pentair 250k minimax ch NG mv? Thank you.

Simple:
  • Insecure bracket holding the pilot assembly to the burner tray
  • now, remove the pilot assembly from bracketry
  • unscrew old pilot generator/thermo pile or thermocouple
  • new may have a clip instead of threaded nut
    • diameter of hole is same so it should just snap into place
  • in reverse order resecure the pilot bracket to burner tray

Replacing thermocouple

A thermocouple actually slides into a keeper that it can be withdrawn from with some steady pulling with needle nose pliars at the base of the thermocouple. Some mounts are screwed and the sleeved thermocouples, keeper is mounted in this.
I almost always just pull it out from it's base.

I have a Rheem PG50T9A gas hot water heater. We had hot water this morning. When I came home the pilot light was out and won't stay lit. Any ideas?

Hopefully just the thermocouple. The thermocouple is the small rod right next to the pilot light. The flame on the pilot heats up the thermocouple and keeps the gas valve on. You can replace it yourself. The thermocouple will be connect by a small nut on the underneath side of the valve, and you will have to pull the thermocouple out of the pilot assembly. Not an expensive part, you can get it at any hardware store. Hope this helps you .

Pilot wont stay on

Thermocouple has failed., replace thermocouple or dirty pilot assembly, not enough heat being genrated to produce the 30 mili volts D.C. current to hold the pilot valve open. Clean pilot orfice. Remove assembly and pilot tubing from gas valve. Blow into pilot tubing to remove dirt.. Make sure pilot flame is engulfing the thermocouple.

I WOULD LIKE TO REPLACE MY THERMO CUPPLING

In simplest terms, a thermocouple is a temperature sensor. Normally inexpensive, a thermocouple is standard on hot water tanks. If your thermocouple breaks or you feel it is not working properly, consider replacing it b?p=y23r90wnbq7oglkvtnbuhgyhrktxauzqpeoaddsf&t=18g7grtjm%2fx%3d1290445898%2fe%3d2143440281%2fr%3dacont%2fk%3d5%2fv%3d8.1%2fw%3d0%2fy%3dyahoo%2ff%3d2680761980%2fh%3dcg49imfjb250iibzzxj2zulkpsjzmjnsotb3tkjxn09nbgtwve5ivuhnewhys1r4yvv6cxbfb0fezfngiibzaxrlswq9ijq4mtmwnteiihrtdg1wpsixmjkwndq1odk4ota5njiwiia-%2fq%3d-1%2fs%3d1%2fj%3d6f060d4c&u=13gohjn6b%2fn%3df8a.bkwnpkw-%2fc%3d715481.14405591.14260180.13829426%2fd%3dlrec%2fb%3d6235626%2fv%3d1 lg.php?category_id=6&content_type=article&content_type_id=584031&key_page=1721642411054458764&site_id=1&bannerid=10089&campaignid=2945&zoneid=2&loc=1&referer=http%3a%2f%2fwww.associatedcontent.com%2farticle%2f584031%2fhow_to_change_a_thermocouple_on_your.html%3fcontent_type_id%3d584031&cb=ebe6534afeavw.php?zoneid=2&cb=1721642411054458764&source=&n=a14de4a9&slice=-1060-&dma=-0-&cty=-us-&content_type=article&content_type_id=584031&category_id=6&key_ad=1045292919&site_id=1&ad_pos=2&key_page=1721642411054458764&ac_url=http%3a%2f%2fwww.associatedcontent.com%2farticle%2f584031%2fhow_to_change_a_thermocouple_on_your.html rather than installing a new gas hot water heater.

Begin this project by shutting off the gas control knob on your hot water heater. Once you are sure that the gas is off, you should use a wrench to remove the nut that attaches the thermocouple to the gas hot water tank. This nut should appear to be securing a piece of copper tubing or other type of tubing. With the nut removed, you should also pull down on the tubing, dislodging it from the thermocouple.

Sometimes there is another nut that attaches the end of the thermocouple to the pilot bracket, if this is the case you should unscrew this nut as well. You can slide it down the tubing and keep it there until you need to replace it.

With the nuts that were holding the unit in place removed, you should be able to slide the old thermocouple out of the brackets that hold it to the hot water heater. You should then take it to a hardware or home improvement store and find a suitable replacement. Then follow these steps to install the new part and fix the hot water heater.

To change the thermocouple, you should press the end of the thermocouple into the pilot bracket as far as you can. If you had to remove a second nut to remove the old thermocouple, now is the time to replace that nut securely.

With the thermocouple in place, you should connect the lead to the control unit. Use the nut you removed in the beginning steps to secure the lead. You should then tighten it at least a quarter turn with a wench to make sure the lead is securely attached to the control unit of the gas hot water heater.

Now that the new thermocouple is installed on your gas hot water heater, turn on the gas shut off valve that you turned off earlier. You should be able to relight the pilot and the functionality of your gas hot water heater should be restored.

Will not stay on geep going out

Will pilot lit then burner and after it does this with just pilot on is that when it goes out. If this is what is happening ,pilot going out, then I would first change thermocouple. The thermocouple is usually on the bottom left hand side of gas valve. It will look like copper wire about as thick as a pencil lead. Remove burner cover and trace thermocouple line to where it mounts on pilot light assy.Thermocouple should be held in place by friction.Remove thermocouple from gas valve by lossenjng retaing nut, reach in burner compartment and grasp thermocouple at base.using small amount of force pull thermocouple from pilot assy and remove. You can get anew one at most hardware stores. Try to get one close to the length you have. A little longer ok. shorter no.Reinstall being careful when you tighten thermocouple nut as it is made of brass and valve body is made of aluminum.Very easy to cross thread or overtighten and strip threads. Make sure thermocouple is properly plased by pilot. Light piloy and hopefully this will tke care of it for you. THANKS

The pilot assembly should look similar to the pic above. Depending on where you live, you may be required to hire a certified plumber to replace the parts. If not you can do it your self. Keep in mind if it's not staying lit you also need to check the thermostat and the thermocoupler before replacing the pilot assembly. There is a good chance it is just the thermocoupler going out. It is one of the first things to check when troubleshooting a pilot light problem with a gas water heater. A thermocouple determines if the pilot light is lit. If it's not lit, the gas valve fails. If that's the problem, replace the thermocouple.

  1. Shut off the gas valve on the water heater and the gas valve on the line near the heater. Remove outer and inner doors, and loosen the pilot and supply tubes and the thermocouple connections to remove the burner assembly.
  2. Step 2 Loosen the screw holding the thermocouple to the bracket. Remove old thermocouple. Bring it with you to the store to ensure you are buying the proper replacement.
  3. Step 3 Install the new thermocouple. Position the thermocouple so that the pilot flame heats 1/2 inch of the tip.
  4. Step 4 Reinstall burner assembly in the water heater. Tighten burner supply tube, pilot tube and thermocouple connections. Tighten thermocouple no more than a quarter turn more than hand-tight.
  5. Step 5 Turn on both gas valves. Check supply tube and pilot tube for leaks with soapy water. If soap bubbles, tighten connections to fix leak. Ignite the pilot light, and make sure the thermocouple tip is heating up. Replace inner and outer doors.

Model rem55pv or Rlp55v propane

The thermocouple seems to be working fine. You should be getting around .025 volts-- I assume yours is rounding up as it should max out around .028 volts.

At this point you should check the relay- DESA states:

Thermocouple Turn off gas supply. Remove thermocouple from gas valve. Using a digital multi-meter set to the lowest DC millivolt setting (meter needs to have alligator clips on ends of leads), clip black lead to the very tip of thermocouple (end removed from valve). Clip red lead to the outer casing of thermocouple for ground. Relight unit output should be between 18 and 28 millivolts. Relay Turn off gas supply. Remove bottom of base (if equipped). Relay is a normally open circuit between terminals 4 and 6 which closes when current is supplied. Using a digital multi-meter measure the resistance. With no power to unit, resistance between terminals 4 and 6 is open circuit or no resistance. Apply power to relay. Resistance between terminals 4 and 6 should be less than 100 mili ohms.
