Penn 565 slows down after running a while. Is track dirty or do I need a stronger transformer?
It depends upon how much you run your trains. Run your finger or clean cloth on the rail. If you see a dark mark your tracks need cleaning. You can also run another set of wires from the transformer to the spot on the track furthest from the transformer. You can even run a third or fourth equally spaced apart if you have large loops and long and heavy trains.

I had the same dilema and trains are not new to me. Look under the piece of straight track that has a notch in it for the wiring. There will be a clip to hold the wire and a piece of plactic that looks like a block. One either side of that is a metal tab that one end of the wiring slides over. Actually each piece of the Fastrack has one of these. Only one has a notch but you can notch any one.

It sounds as though you may have two defective transformers. Lionel has reported problems with some of their smaller transformers. I would have the transformers and the engines checked by a Lionel service station or contact their customer service department for help.
SOURCE: how do i wire the transformer? there are four
good grief..here is the real fix... 2 terminals are for constant "ON" voltage for powering scenery lights, ect. the other 2 are for the train,,,and the out put voltage is variable to the relation of the throttle handle on the transformer. Use a cheap volt meter ($9.99) and by reading the 4 posts t will be obvious which 2 are varable power and which 2 are constant voltage .........
