Rainbow e series smells burnt when power nozzle in use
When I use the power nozzle the unit smells like it is burning then shuts off on its own. When I use the regular nozzle it does fine. I have cleaned the unit and filter. Any suggestions?

So depending on how long, you may have rusted out the bearings in your motor, especially if it sat so long as to eat the glue off of your gasket.
Sounds like you may need a new motor, gasket, baffle plate and separator.
The response by Lynnette is in reference to the power nozzle....if you are having this issue with the main unit, then it could be the armature is starting to go bad. Have your Rainbow in front of you and give us a call. We can walk you through some steps to narrow it down.
<p>The power nozzle brush roll bearings could be locking up from hair and debris wrapped around them. If that is the case, then the brush roll will be hard to turn and will cause the belt to heat up and give a burning smell. All SE series vacuums have a built in thermal and load fuse on the motor, and if it blew, it has to be replaced, or wired directly, with out it on there.
Motor brushes are usually the source of a non working Rainbow D4 and SE and all model Rainbow vacuums and when they burn out, they usually take the motor armature with them, from excessive heat and flare electrical arking to the armature.
It is probably the thermal and load fuse, that is your problem, if you did not smell any electric burning type of smell, before it quit. It could be the power switch, but not as likely as the fuse.

The belt looses it tensile strength (tightness) over time. But it's the part about funny sounds and shutting down that concerns me. If it smells like a tire fire then it's the belt if it smells like plastic and burned hair then the motor has a bad field or armature. Probably one of the carbon brushes got hung up and burned a segment in the armature.
