The camera has 4.1 Mpixels so that means each picture can have up to 4 million pixels (picture Cells) a 300 dpi (dots per inch) is very very well within it's capabilities and more
it is not the camera where you need to make a change... dpi is a printer term not a camera term the 72 dpi is screen resolution and is for viewing the picture on your screen if the photo opened in it's true size you would only see a fraction of the picture without scrolling when you choose to print out the picture you choose with the printer software what dpi (size) to print it
most camera's have a choice of what size picture size to take (lower the pixels used the smaller the photo and the more you can fit into your camera's storage) as a rule of thumb a 640 x 480 picture equates to a 6 x 4 inch photo a 3.1 mpixel setting will take a picture that is 2048x1536 pixels or 28.44 x 21.33 inches in size printed and have 16 million colours it will also be a 9 meg jpg!
My advice is to set the camera to take pictures using the amount of megapixels that closely matches you intended print size anything bigger is a waste of space and would lose a little quality if reduced in size before printing anything smaller would reduce the quality if you enlarge before printing

So how do I change the camera settings? Whenever I open a picture that I have taken in photoshop...it only opens as 72 dpi...and I cannot use that for printing.
