Just yesterday I purchased this handy little scanner with the intent of sharing and organizing a shoeboxfull of 35mm film slides. However, when I "select source" there is not an option to Scan Negatives.
In an effort to solve this, I reinstalled the CD-ROM that came with it, downloaded the latest drivers from the Canon website, tried to un-plug and replug the film scanner attatchment, before and after attatching the scanner to my PC. Nothing seems to work.
Running XP on a system that exceeds all the required stats.
In order to see these options, you must have the Film Adapter Unit (FAU) attached to the scanner. The FAU is designed to scan in 35mm film, either positive or negative. The scanner has no options to scan in mounted 35mm slides.
Does the scanner work for scanning at all? If not, you may have a communication problem between the computer and the scanner, i.e., the computer doesn't know how the scanner is configured so it doesn't show the options. If it's a communication problem, check for any other USB devices that might interfere with communication. Especially, some printers seem to take over communications. Try disconnecting all other USB devices (except keyboard, mouse, etc.), reboot, and see if the situation corrects itself.

Old Marine,
Thanks for the help. After your suggestion I started to play around with all the cords. Turns out, I had been plugging the FAU in upside down (I can hear the eye-rolling from here, lol) In my defense, the FAU plugs in very easily upside down, but to plug it in 'correctly', I had to really play with the angles and push up and in. A little bit of a design flaw IMHO.
A little heads up for anone that has this problem in the future: if the scanner flatbed light turns on when you plug in the FAU, you've got it in upside down :)
I'm facing the same problem here as well, after followed all the instrctions in the manual, i still couldn't find the device without the name "WIA" from the "select source" menu, therefore I got no way to get in the "advance film scanning mode". But the scanner surely works well expect the film scanning part. Running on Vista Home and all drivers were installed correctly(after heaps of times of re-installing), any gurus could fix this for me? Thx.
I can't get the fau cord to plug in correctly. It never gives me an option to scan a negative.
