How can I refresh bios from cd rom drive

The current video driver seems to freeze after about 4 minutes into a fresh install of Windows XP or Windows 7. I am unable to boot the original Vista image either. I have reformatted the HD several times. I believe I need to upgrade the bios on the lap top. I am not sure how to do that without an OS. Please advise.

Remove the battery of laptop and press power button to discharge any charge in motherboard that will reset the bios. Put battery back and press start button and press hold delete button to enter into bios, where you can select optimized setting or fail save mode whatever good options available and boot. If you have windows 7 installed, check your RAM. For instructions use https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GJsVvHJqO34

SOURCE: Toshiba Satellite 5005-S504; boot from USB? Reformat HD w/o CD-ROM?

Are you saying you want to re-install XP on the hard drive? If the 5005 has the same bios as 90% of the Toshibas out there, "usb devices, or usb rom" should be one of the options in the boot order in the bios. It's a bit different tho, in that if you press F12 for temp boot order, it seems as if it doesn't do anything, but in fact, the icons across the lower 1/3 of the screen are your boot options; just move the highlight to the desired icon.

Good luck.

BTW, what's made these "infamous"?

How to install windows xp

To install Windows XP :

Required items
1: Windows XP CD ( SP 1/2/3 )/ Windows XP setup in a USB drive ( please ensure that you have made the USB bootable or it won't be detected )
2: CD Rom Drive ( if you want to install by CD )
3: USB Drive ( if you want to install by USB )

For a fresh install , follow the following steps accordingly :

1: Insert the CD into the Drive and restart the PC.
2: Note that your boot settings in the bios settings are correct (i.e 1st Boot priority CD drive if you are installing with CD and 1st boot priority USB if you are installing with Pendrive ).

3: Follow the steps shown on the screen which will throw a couple of options and settings.

4: Click on ' Install a fresh copy of Windows ' when asked for.
5: Select the drive in which you want to install it , it will be formatted and new windows installation would take place in that same drive.
6: Set your date and time region , enter the serial key when asked for.
7: The whole process should take around 45 minutes.

You are done installing it..Congrats!

Kindly note that installing any version of Windows by USB is always quicker than installing by CD/DVD.

My computer starts windows and restarts

It would be best to start with a fresh bios flash that you can download from

http://www.perfectdrivers.com/drivers/Bios/Soltek-SL-K890Pro-939-Bios-T1-4

or

http://driverscollection.com/?H=SL-K890Pro-939&By=Soltek

After this is installed then start the computer in SAFE mode and run a full virus, malware and spyware scan.

Then restart the computer in normal mode and if it fails again you will have to use a Windows restore disc, if you have one, or use the Windows installation disk to start and run a Repair on the system then restart it. Then download all the remaining up top date drivers at

http://rapidshare.com/files/12368442/SL-K890Pro-939.rar (51.394 MB) No pass required.

And run a full virus, malware and spyware sweep on the download before using it. Then install all the latest drivers to you system and restart. Then check for any Microsoft updates.

Computer wont boot properly

A POST diags card can help you resolve your problem/s, if not then.
1. remove all devices and insert the floppy drive, one RAM module and video card.
2. Go into the BIOS configuration and set it to the default configuration, check the installed RAM is it correct? .
3. Insert the remainder RAM module/s and check the POST info and BIOS again, has it detected all the RAM?
4. Does the computer Boot up using a floppy boot disk
5. Insert the CD and hard disk and check the POST info and BIOS configuration, does it detect the new drives?
6. Does the computer Boot up using a floppy boot disk, run FDISK, can you see the hard drive, if so delete all partitions (if any) and create a new primary DOS partition and then format the hard drive.
7. Boot up with the Windows CD (may have to change the boot order to the CD as the first boot device).
8. Delete the DOS partition, create a primary NTFS partition and the do a full NTFS format (not a quick format) and continue to install Windows Xp or Vista.
9. Install the other device eg modem, Lan etc. and the drivers.

If you have trouble with the first 5 steps, then you most likely have a faulty motherboard and/or a faulty hard disk.

Replacing with harddrive 40GB

Did you simply swap hard drives? "Couldn't find NTLDR" basically means the PC cannot find any version of Windows installed because the boot file is missing. This could be because you have a CD in the drive or the hard drive is missing or broken.

If you put in a new hard drive to replace your older smaller one you need to reinstall Windows on that new 40GB drive or it just won't work. If you have some PC Tech friends they should be able to move the data which is tricky or help you out.
