Just a little history on the set. i bought it used and it worked flawlessly for over a year until one day we had a thunderstorm the the power went off for a split second, ever since that happened my set has not been the same.
Every ONCE in awhile when i go to turn the set on, the lamp light on the front of the set will flash once, then the standby/temp will flash once, then the lamp indicator light will continue to flash. now during all of this, the bulb is lit. after 30-45 seconds the set will power off. NOW SOMETIMES it will not power off and if you just leave it alone the picture will eventually come on. i few other scenerios when this has happened is 1) i turned off the circuit breaker in the house to change a light fixture and then the first time i tried to watch tv later on that night the set wouldnt turn on and it took about 1/2 a day until it finally did 2) one time we were watching tv and someone accidently turned off the wall switch that was controlling the outlet the set was plugged into, when we tried to turn the set back on it wouldnt turn back on.
The last person i spoke to about this problem suggested either the color wheel, or the digital board as the suspect.
I was under the impression that the color wheel normally starts making noise when its on its way out?
I would hate to have to be without the set for days/weeks if i brought it to a repair shop because since this is usually such a random problem the thing would most likely work flawlessly in the hands of a repair shop and the second i got the set home and plugged it in it would probably act up on me!
I just want to get it fixed tho, because sooner or later its gonna break for good!
I'm open to all ideas here! I am a very hands on, technical guy, so tearing this set apart does not phase me. I'd rather fix the thing myself if i can figure out what component is at fault here.

Hi,
Initially, have you tried a full hard reset? If not, pls unplug from the mains. Most current devices would reset and revert back to factory default settings (assuming no internal hardware fault) when unplugged for a considerable period of time (from a few minutes to a couple of hours).
Additionally, have you tried powering the unit using another outlet?
Pls post back for any development(s) or even the lack of it.
Hope this be of initial help/idea. Good luck and kind regards.
Thank you for using FixYa.

Your color wheel needs to be changed. Mine just did the same thing. I changed mine, and the buzzing sound went away, however now my picture washes out with light or yellow colors. The darks look green and purple also.
SOURCE: Samsung DLP model hln617w won't turn on (not bad bulb)
Samsung is notorious for having bad color wheels in their DLPs. Well lets just say they are like toasters, they only last a certain amount of time. If the color wheel isn't spinning or is broken, the set will power down almost immediately after you hit the button, you may not even hear the entire fire up jingle. Check the wheel, if you can see the bulb light up for that split second. Actually, check it whether the bulb lights up or not.

according to samsung this is indeed the problem.
Testimonial: "Excellent expert advice. Confirmed what I believed to be the problem and it was. Very knowledgable"

I would suspect the lamp first as they can cause intermittent shut down issues.

Ditto, I have the same exact problem except I don't what what, if anything happened with power or otherwise prior to this problem. I even probably wasted $110 on a bulb. Stupid me assumed if the lamp light was flashing and I had no picture it would be the bulb. :-/
I also noticed I don't hear the chime when powering on. My kids may have turned that off though, I don't know.
