The spring on the switch tends to move the switch to a middle position from the off position. It makes it hazardous to use the mixer, and frequently has caused ingredients to fly all over the counter when the mixer came on when bumped. The problem seems to be in the detent on the switch arm, buit I can't figure ouit how to correct.

When you said "the speed switch doesn't want to stay in the off position", you meant to
say "the speed switch in the OFF position does not turn OFF the mixer", or "the speed
switch physically cannot be moved to the OFF position"?
In any case, try to adjust the mixer speeds. Obtain a copy of the K45SS Repair Part List from Kitchenaid.com. Remove the screw holding the End Cover and locate the three screws from the Control Plate. All three (2 top left and right, and 1 bottom) must be adjusted.
1. Loosen the lock nuts enough & Turn the 2 top screws clockwise until they cannot be turned anymore. Leave the bottom screw alone for now. 2. Use a dab of white paint or paper whiteout to mark the positions of the Phillips screws. 3. Plug in your mixer and Set the speed selector to "Stir". 4. Turn each top screw One full turn couterclockwise (alternating between Left and Right) Keep making one full turn at the time (for both left and right) until the motor starts running. 5. Put your hand near the Agitator shaft and allow it to brush your finger slightly. Use your watch or clock and start counting the number of times the shaft touches your finger in 60 seconds. The correct count should be 60 RPM (Rounds Per Minute). If it is less or more than 60, give each screw 1/4 turn counterclockwise or clockwise and start counting again. Now tighten both lock nuts. 6. Set the speed selector to "6" and turn the bottom screw either clockwise or counterclockwise to achieve a speed of 180 RPM.

You can try moving the lever slightly up or down while moving it forward to see if this will free it it or make a difference. Otherwise, the spring inside may have snapped or the speedlink cam may have came loose or broke. Either one will require the top end assembly to be removed to replace these parts.

Clean the curved surface of the carbon brushes with a sharp knife being careful not to scratch the curved surface. If you have them installed wrong they will not go all the way in and will not contact the armature and it will not run. Measure the length, as done above, of the spring to make sure it is in correctly!! If it is not in correctly the spring will stick out 1/4 inch longer than it should.

There is a spring, item #4, which hooks on to the bottom of the control plate, item # 25, and pulls it back when you move the lever to off. Remove the rear cover and see if that spring is still connected to the control plate and to the lever arm, Item # 3. Here is the diagram:
The easiest thing to check is the brushes. There are two large "buttons" on the sides of the mixer. They have a large slot in them. You can use a quarter to stick in the slot and turn the button counterclockwise. Once removed you will see a spring sticking out. Now this is important. On the other end of the spring is a small carbon bar (the brush) which is square and about half an inch long. Note that there is one corner of the carbon bar, the brush, which is removed forming a flat on that corner. Note the position of the flat so that you can replace the brush in the same position. If you don't then the brush will not contact the armature and the unit will never run!
Once removed examine the end of the brush to see if there is some crud on it, most likely charred flour. Carefully scrape the crud off the brush and re-insert it remembering the above . . .make sure it slides easily into position. If it is sticky then remove it again and clean out the brass hole with a q-tip.
Do this to both brushes and the unit will most likely run.
Of course make sure the outlet you are using has power to it!!
If it still doesn't run then there is a problem with the phase control board or the motor.
I determined that the switch that controls whether the mixer is on or off is controlled by a copper bar with a contact. The contact got fused to the copper bar, possibly due to a short. Since the contact got fused to the copper bar, the circuit was always connected, so the mixer was always on. The solution was to 1) unplug the mixer, and 2) take a screw driver and gently pry the contact away from the copper bar. When the mixer is in the off position, the copper bar and contact are no longer in contact. When the mixer is on, the copper bar and contact make contact. My mixer now works just fine. Yea!
Hi again, LESZCZ2.I believe you are speaking about your Speed Control Lever Assembly “switch”.Is that correct?From the symptoms you describe, it’s very possible, as you feel, the Control plate spring is broken or has become unhooked from the lever. You should be able to inspect this yourself and determine if that’s happened with just a little effort. Be sure to have your Parts List Manual on hand, too.If you don’t have the original you can easily download a PDF version from the KA website: (http://www.kitchenaid.com/flash.cmd?/#/page/home). Click on Customer Care>Locate Manuals& Guides> and enter the 6 character model number, KSM150 and select one the files listed for your model that appears under Parts List (61): KSM150PSWH0.pdf (773.44 KB) and save that file to your PC. Turn to pages 8 & 9, titled ‘Motor And Control Part’.Locate Illus. Nos. 1, 2, 3 & 4, Pivot screw, Spring washer, Speed control assembly lever, and Control plate spring, respectively.Carefully inspect these parts to see if they have not come loose, particularly the pivot screw and spring washer.Also check to see if the spring hasn’t become unhooked from the lever or broken. As far as parts go, here are five potential vendors in no particular order: RepairClinic.com; mendingshed.com; searspartsdirect.com; partstore.com; and Grainger.com.Prices can vary widely between vendors, so do your comparison shopping. If you feel troubleshooting and repairing is beyond your capability, then I would seek out a local small appliance repair shop in your area. Call to explain your circumstances and find out their hourly rate and get an estimate of what they think it would cost to repair your mixer. Im a tech for hobart and have seen old mixers but not that old.Hobart wont have parts but you could goto an electrical supply place,take the switch and ask them for something universal.
