You can indeed mix IDE & SATA drives on a computer. If installing the OS (Operating System) to the IDE HD, you will only need to instruct the BIOS to boot the IDE HD drive first.

If you decide to install an OS on & boot the SATA drive first; you will need to instruct the BIOS to boot the SATA drive first and may need to provide a driver for the SATA controller - if the OS install does not recognize the SATA drive. The driver should have been included on a disk or diskette with the controller (or on the motherboard driver disk if a built-in type controller). You should see a prompt asking "If you need to install a driver.... press F6" (or similar). Press the F6 key and supply the driver disk - and follow the prompts.

Good luck!

I have a Soltek SL-K8AV2-R1L with one 160 gb sata harddisk (with XP on it), a 40 gb IDE harddisk on IDE channel 0, and two DVD/CD-drives on IDE channel 1. Tried to reinstall XP but XP setup did not...

Hi,

Welcome to Fixya. The first thing you need to check is if the SATA Hard Disk is detected in Bios. In the system information you will see there the list of the drives including the DVD and the IDE hard drive. You can also check the Boot Sequence or Priority if it is there. Please let me know if you find the SATA hard disk on the list.

Thanks

Can i make my 80GB hard drive to 100GB? 80GB 7200rpm SATA SAMSUNG

This is not possible, 80Gb is 80Gb and 100gb is 100gb, but I am afraid, even if you like to replace, you'll not be able to get 100gb since it's no a standard Hard disk capacity. If you are trying to upgrade, then you can find 120gb, 160gb, 250gb, 320gb etc... Good luck. Thanks for using FixYa.

Did not detect the additional sata hard disk?

Have you tried connecting the SATA hard-drive to a different computer, just to prove that it is not a "dud" ?

Is the SATA hard-drive getting power?
(It should warm-up a bit, and you make feel it vibrate as it spins.)

Have you tried a different SATA cable between the hard-drive and the SATA connector on the motherboard?

Check the BIOS settings, to be sure that detection of SATA drives is "enabled".

OK the only shot you got is to geta USB to SATA/IDE converter dongle, connect to another PC's USB port. Hopefully, you will be able to read it. Otherwise still plugged in you may be able to use recovery software and get you DATA back. Recover my files is one,

Seagate SATA 80GB Master Drive and Seagate IDE 80GB Salve Drive

Dear,

You have to make IDE drive as slave. For this put the jumper to slave in IDE drive. Possibility of CMOS battery is rare, but you can confirm it by checking your system time in BIOS. If system time is ok then there is no problem in CMOS battery and you need not to replace it.

Thanks,

How to install bigger HD in IBM 300GL GL PC? Any limitations?

Is it IDE or SATA? Put the Hdd in your pc, on IDE, the wide ribbon cable is for data, it can only go in one way, and power is the molex connector. 4 power points, ussualy 4 wires. orange, black, red, black, yellow. can only go in one way. thats it. Make sure that if you are running cd/dvd roms and you have 2 hdd's, that the two hdds run on the same ribbon cable, and the cd roms on their own cable. also put the new hdd to slave. (you change it via jumper settings, ussualy printed on the hdd itself)

SATA is easier. you need two cables. sata power, and data. they can also only go in one way. google sata connectors if you don't know how they look. though, if i is a PIII board, i doubt it'll support SATA, so you'll need to buy an IDE hdd.

Goodluck
