Coleman Powermate Premium Plus 6250W Portable Generator Logo

My powermate pm0647000 stopped generating electricity.

I'm trying to troubleshoot: should I have continuity between the rings that the brushs rub against? Thanks, Phil.

I have the same problem. Brand new out of the box for Hurrican Ike. Used it off and on for 3 days. The motor started up and was working fine, but it stopped generating electricity. Any ideas. I box this for Hurricane Rita but never needed to use it, so now it is out of warranty even though it was used for the first time on 9-13-08

My Coleman Powermate 5500W Portable generator was new out of the box after Hurricane Ike came to Houston. It was used for 3 days, and worked great. On the 4th day although the motor ran just fine, it stopped generating electricity. I bought this for Hurricane Rita and never had to use it, so it is out of warranty. It was used for the first time brand new on 9-13-08. The generator is really poor. The sound was so loud it was deafening!

Flash it !
Start your generator, plug a single speed drill into the recepticle, while the generator is running make sure the drill is in the forward posistion then turn the drill chuck couterclockwise with your hand untill your generator power's up.
This simple fix " excites " the stator.
Good luck !

Not generating any electricity

Check the rotor rings for cleanliness, they should be shiny, check the brushes and the capacitor, located in the end of the alternator bell housing cover

Hi i have a Black max, Powermate Generator model #PM0496750 ,6750 watt it run great for 3 hrs and then stop generating,,, clean the frets on rotor where brushes runs on and its good for another 3 hrs then...

You have excessive arching on the rotor slip rings by the sound of it, if you clean them and it works well then 3 hours later same problem? What is the conditon of the brushes? Also I trust youa r enot cleaning polishing them with sanpaper etc, they have a very fine finish and should be polished with a super fine grit paper or stone, pref while turning the engine. Any scratches won't work

Generator ran fine all day. refueled then no power

I am assuming after re-fueling your output power stopped working. If this is the case then remove the small cover from the end bell and inspect the brushes. They must touch the slip ring. The best way to check to see of the brushes are touching the slip ring is to use a multi-meter on a Resistance scale of R x 100 or R x 1000 and you should see a very low resistance reading. If you have a high resistance reading or an open indication on the meter; the brushes are NOT touching the slip ring. They are either too short from use or damaged due to breakage or heat caused by loose connections.
Inspect the brushes one at a time. There should be at least 3/8 inch of visible carbon brush. Anything less and it is time to change the brushes.

If you need more assistance or I completly missed the mark respond here and I wil help you.

I have a old Coleman powermate Model PC 54 5000 I have no AC Power. I have checked the rotor and stator for continuity in the windings, no problem. I have tried exciting the brushes, got a spark, but...

How did you put exciting voltage to brushes? Plus to plus, minus to minus or no mater?
The condenser can be checked by a capacitance meter or an Ohm meter.
Diodes also by a diode test with a multimeter. Reverse should be infinity, forward 0.5 - 0.7 V.

No AC out put

After working on several of this style coleman generator,i have found that the lead wires in the windings that are soldered to where your brushes would contact tend to break.I don't know if it's a poor design or just a fluke,i would check to see if your getting continuity on the rotor and go from there. They seem to either "burn off" or just break.

Checked capacitor, diodes and circuit breakers and all check out ok. Still no output voltage. Excited with 12 volts across brushes. Still no output voltage. Took the head off and check field windings which...

Make sure it is not the brush set.
There must be continuity from one slip ring to another.
If not, but rotor doesn't look burnt - check points where rotor wire is soldered to slip rings, or clear contact point on each side of wire and check continuity there, past slip rings and brushes. Big chance that wire came loose from slip ring.
Had such problem on my Champiion 3500
evern if burnt - rotor is easy to rewind at home, unlike stator.

Unless your model is Inverter type - there is AVR module.
But, unless your rotor has continuity - don't bother going further.

My coleman powermate generator will start but will not generate electricity. Any suggestions for problem diagnosis???

The voltage regulator controls the output. You will need to check that first.

Coleman Powermate 8750 will not generate electricity.

I had a similar situation with a friends generator. After sitting around unused for a few years it would not generate because the residual magnitism was weak. I plugged a light into it and by using the throttle arm I breifly ran up the RPM and the light came on. DO NOT MAINTAIN THE HIGH RPM FOR MORE THAN A FEW SECONDS.

No electric power generated from my Coleman Powermate Maxa 5000W.

the gensets on coleman generators are definately nothing to brag about but i would start by checking the windings and make sure the brushes have a clean armature to ride on
