This buttonholer will not work. The lever is down, buttonholer is put on correctly and size of button is selected. Yet, the machine only sews in a tiny, straight stitch in a forward line . What am I doing wrong?
Step1Mark the placement of your buttonholes on the garment fabric. See "How to Cut Out and Mark Pattern Pieces on Fabric" for details. Your sewing pattern should indicate buttonhole length and position. Step2Make sure that the buttonhole is the correct length for your button. The length of your buttonhole should equal the diameter of the button plus the button height. Step3Use the automatic buttonhole feature on your machine, if available. Adjusting a dial or level makes the two sides of the buttonhole and the two ends, or bar tacks. See your owner's manual to find out if your machine has a buttonhole feature and how to use it. Step4Use the zigzag setting on your machine to make a buttonhole manually. Set the stitch width and length settings at their next-to-lowest settings. Play with the settings until you get the proper stitch length and widths. Step5Sew down the left side of the buttonhole marking. Lift the presser foot and pivot the fabric 180 degrees. Step6Lower the presser foot and double the stitch width. Hold the fabric firmly so it will not move and let the machine take a few side-to-side stitches. Return the stitch width to its prior setting. Step7Repeat steps 5 and 6. Step8Cut the buttonhole open with a small pair of very sharp scissors. Take care not to cut into any of your stitching.

CHECK AND CORRECT ONE OF THIS
Generally most sewing problems are due to sticking parts because of non usage as =you have stated or because the tension has been not set right. what I suggest is that you take the time to do some cleaning of the machine like what bis pointed out in your manual use a light weight mineral oil to wipe the moving parts with, but not too much. also adjust the tension of the foot so there is pressure on the material as to move it while sewing. after all the cleaning and adjusting rethread the bobbin and make sure it is seated properly also rethread the need and make sure the thread moves freely from the spool. this should do the trick. please rate this
Try adjusting the size, see if it changes the result and go from there, you might also want to ask other experts, sewing machines are not my speciality.

use an interfacing in the area of the garment where buttonholes are placed. stabilizer or regular interfacing can be used
make a practice buttonhole on a scrap of the fabric you are using. then try the buttonhole with the selected button
1- Select one of buttonhole patterns
2- replace the presser foot with the buttonhole foot - refer to page 26-27 on changing the presser foor
3. insert the button into the buttonhole foot refer to using button hole foot above
4. lower the buttonhole lever so that it drops down vertically between the stoppers

The buttonholer on my Singer7462 does not revese itself and and does nothing "automatic" as described in manual. The lever does not push the buttonholer back but sits in one place and sews up and down. Also the stitches are tiny, straight stitches, and not the buttonhole stitches as shown in the manual. The machine is only 2 years old and should not need repair,
as it hasn't been used very often. Any help is appreciated.

I need advice on step by step operation of my Singer buttonhole maker. It will not move on its own unless I give the lever a little push . But it still does not sew the backward stitch separatly. It sits in one place and sews up and down making a knot. The problem may be in the lever or it is not receiving the signal from the machine's computer. Any further help, besides cleaning and oiling will be appreciated. The manual is no help with this problem.

Have buttonhole foot in place an d have pulled down buttonhole lever. Can't see where to go from this point. Directions show being able to choose between two forms of buttonhole. I seem to stitch a straight line that stops and continues in same spot creating a lump, doesn't return to do other side as I would expect.
