Bring down your needlepoint down so it intersects the needleplate. Then you can use a ruler to measure from the needlepoint to the lines on the needleplate. You can mark them, or if you usually use a specific seam allowance, mark that line with a piece of painter's tape. Then you'll always have an easy way to recognize that measurement.

Use a small ruler set the needle down on the size of seam you need
then lower the presser foot so it can't move
then set your seam guide to that

Firstly you need to ensure your needle is centred, remove the presser foot for a bit of room, lower the needle down into the needle plate, and then measure from the needle to the right to each marking on your needle plate.

If you are in the USA, then I'd guess there would be three markings at 1/4" 1/2" and 5/8". Quarter inch is your narrow seam for quilting but if you are sewing garments, then the seam allowance is usually 5/8", it would be marked on your paper pattern though. Some patterns such as Burda came with no allowance and you need to add them on, again it would be marked on the pattern though.

If you are in a metric country, then it will probably have 10mm, 15mm and 20mm marked. Normal seam allowance is 15mm.

If you have trouble remembering which marking to use, you could always stick a strip of masking tape onto your plate along the line you use for seams until you get some sewing experience.

You might like to visit www.sewing.about.com, Debbie Cosgrove gives loads of very useful information there, a learn to sew page along with some free projects. At the tender age of 10 I recall sewing an apron and triangle scarf in home economics as my very first project on an Elna Star SU, simple projects are best when starting out.

If you are going to sew garments, then you may also like to check out www.patternreview.com, I love this site as members share their experience with commercial sewing patterns, some very talented sewists there; many of them have their own blogs too.

If you can find a sewing beginner class, take it, it will get you started with basic techniques that patterns don't really give you and help with that initial learning curve. And my last suggestion, invest in a good sewing textbook; I've got the Vogue Book of Sewing, and also the The Sewing Book by Alison Smith published by Doring Kindersley; I love this one, loads of great images and its a fresh publication. Bit pricey but if you could always ask a loved one to buy it for Christmas. Feel free to connect to me if you have any other sewing questions, I'd love to help.

Happy sewing

I am using the brother csi6000i with the 1/4inch seam guide. How do I get my needle adjusted to the hole on my guide presser foot?

You need to set the seam guide (or whatever you are using) to be 1/4" away from the needle. Basically, do not concentrate on moving the needle to accommodate the seam guide. Move the seam guide to accommodate the needle position. I use painter's tape and measure 1/4" from the needle point to place the painter's tape. Then I use the painter's tape as my seam guide.

In actuality, almost any flat presser foot will work that is wide without any ability to roll edges, pintuck, etc. You can attain the 1/4" seam by measuring exactly 1/4" from the needle and mark with a strip of painter's tape, or some other movable material. Then just use that painter's tape as your 1/4" guide. Somewhere I saw someone recommended using 1/4" inch graph paper as a guide--set the needle on a line and use the 1/4" line for the fabric guide.

Your best option will be a "walking" or "even feed" foot. Your Brother dealer should have them in stock.

I do not have a problem with the machine. I am curious about the plate numbers. On an american sewing machine, the plate the fabric feeds through, normal have 1/4, 5/8, etc. On the Euro Pro Denim Model ...

So an American machine has imperial seam guides on the needle plate.

But the Euro Pro would be European and in metric so it has seam guides in metric widths, i.e. millimetres. 10 will be 10 millimetres, or 1 centimetre, 16 mm, 22mm.

A normal seam in metric is 15mm - in your land 5/8", the two are not quite the same but pretty close. This link http://convert.french-property.co.uk/ gives you a converter between the two systems.

A 1/4" is your standard piecing seam for the quilters and this is why many Australian quilters will buy a 1/4" foot so they can guide the fabric along the foot edge to get nice standard seams.

So you could break out some masking tape and a metric/imperial ruler and measure from the needle to the right and put a strip of tape onto your needle plate to mark your 5/8" dimension you are used to. Or use the 16mm seam marking which is very close anyway.

Hope this helps.

I want to know the seam guide lines on the sewing machine, I am not sure what line the 5/8" is if it is the 2nd to right from footer or 3rd to right from footer. It would be helpful to let me know...

just raise the presser foot, manually wind the fly wheel down so the needle is close to the needle plate, then measure with a ruler from the needle to the markings on your needle plate. If you find that it does not have a 5/8" marking and you need one, then mark one with an indelible marker, or stick on a piece of masking tape where the line would be so you can guide your sewing fabric edge along it.

Hi. I have a Necchi SUB22. Please exlpain how to use the quilting guide as a seam guide.

Hi Fixya. I decided simply to measure the seam width I needed and place the quilting guide at that point. Then I used the position of the quilting guide as a guide in stitching a straight seam.
