The water to the dishwasher was turned off under the sink so another repair (not related to the dishwasher) could be made. Then the dishwasher was turned on while the water was turned off. Once the mistake was discovered, we turned the water back on and now the dishwasher will turn on and starts humming but does not fill with water. We have checked the hose and water is getting to the unit. It just isn't filling.
There is a float in the dishwasher that sometimes gets stuck and when that happens, the washer will not fill. Look for a (mostly round) upright part that will be in the front of the washer either on the left or right side. That is the float and it could be stuck in the cutoff position (caused by the soap). The older models have it on the same side where the soap is placed. The newer models have it on the opposite side to stop that exact problem. MOve it up and down and clean out any dried caked soap that might be under it.
Good Luck
The model of my Bosch dishwasher is SHX43P15UC and it is only a couple of years old. Is the float switch found in the front of the dishwasher behind the kick plate at the bottom of the unit? And, so I know when I find it, is the part metal or plastic?
It is plastic and is found in the bottom of the dishwasher where the element is. It is not behind the kick plate. It is in the front on either the left or right side - pull and push on it and then remove the build up underneath it. The float is designed so that when there is water in the unit, it floats up and cuts off the supply of water - hence my suspicion that it is clogged and stuck in the up position.
