I have to be missing something really obvious because in timer recording mode, I can't find a place to enter the tv channel I want to record from. And, I'm unable to record a program I'm watching because when I hit 'record' it always tapes whatever program is on channel 3 - no matter what channel I'm watching. Aren't there any new vcr recorders that work like the old ones where you can record one show while watching another? Thanks.
SOURCE: VCR not recording higher-numbered channels
Yes coming in her VCR with Cable or ant, if she has satellite it would be different. Going out to tv from VCR. Then in is Input the Out is Output. RF cable connection or A/V inputs(jacks) either one same way of hookup.
SOURCE: VCR thinks ALL tapes are write protected.
the record tab detection switch inside the machine is broken
SOURCE: VCR tape playback not good
Check your "tracking" If the tape played fine in the old machine, then tracking is the answer, provided that the new machine records good.

This is more a work-around than a solution, as the unit is failing to function normally; however, having the identical problem I observed that the unit is failing to power on at 2:00 minutes before beginning recording, a necessary step to record to DVD.
My work-around is the following:
1) Set up the timer, inputting necessary date, time, etc. as normal. With the unit still powered on, start the timed recording mode by pressing timer set, as normal. You will see the red clock icon and the DVD logo iluminate on the VFD.
2) Press the Standby-On power button. This will power the unit on in VCR mode. You should at this time be unable to switch from VCR to DVD mode since the DVD is still in timer mode. LEAVE THE UNIT POWERED ON in this manner. The timer will function and the DVD will record normally.
I have no clue why my unit suddenly forgot how to power up on its own in order to record to DVD. If anyone has an answer for that one please post!

check out this diagram, paying close attention to the audio video cable hookups.
assume the cable tv box represents the converter box
you are going to come out of the converter box audio and video outputs into the new magnavox dvd/vcr combo audio and video inputs.
Then out of the new magnavox dvd/vcr combo outputs to the inputs on the tv if it has such inputs. The TV will have to operate on the video input 1 or 2 if the tv has such a thing, use the remote for the tv to adjust the input signal to line in 1 or 2 depending on what it has.
If the tv has no coaxial input or audio video inputs then you might have to use an adapter, you can get these from radio shack.
You say it will not record from the tv, but in all actuality the dvd vcr combo is getting the signal from the converter box not the tv, do you understand what I mean here?
So the dvd vcr combo gets input from the converter box so you will have to set it to view signal from the line input you have plugged in from the converter box. line 1 or 2 or whatever the input is.
the tv will have to be set on the line input to view the signal from the dvd vcr combo.
That is as easy as I can put it. Study the diagram closely. You will see what I mean.
