My little boy stuck a butter knife in the latch on the door of the washer. He popped the latch down and (I assume) broke it. I took the door apart (basically) and see the part I need. I just can't figure out how to remove the latch assembly. Is there a special button/ tool to use to remove it and replace it with a new part?

HI,
If your dishwasher leaks, check these:
Main tub seal
Door gasket or seal
Water-inlet valve
Hoses
Main tub seal
Note…
If the main motor of your dishwasher is mounted vertically, beneath the
center bottom of the dishwasher, the following instructions probably
apply to you. But if your motor is mounted horizontally, the pump isn't
serviceable--you need to replace the entire pump and motor assembly.
The
main tub seal is beneath the drain impeller. It prevents the water in
the dishwasher from leaking out near the shaft of the motor. To get to
the seal, which is inside the dishwasher, remove the:
Then pry the seal out of its housing and replace it.
Door gasket or seal
Over
time, door gaskets and seals harden and lose their ability to seal
properly. You can't repair the seals. You need to replace them if
they've begun to leak.
Water-inlet valve
The
water-inlet valve, itself, seldom leaks. But, the water-supply line
from the house and the rubber tube leading from the valve to the inside
of the dishwasher may leak. Tighten or repair/replace these as
necessary.
The water-inlet valve could mechanically stick open.
When that happens, the water continues to flow into the dishwasher,
which then floods your kitchen. Turn off the water supply to the
dishwasher, and replace the valve.
Hoses
Behind
the lower access panel on your dishwasher are several rubber or plastic
hoses. If the leak appears at a connection, try a new clamp. If that
doesn't work, replace the hose.

look at the latch via the hole in the door where it closes to the tank? is the latch faced away from the tank? if so, then grab a paper clip and fold it so you can hook it around the latch then just pull outward towards the tank. you might need to hold that paper clip with some pliers. if it happens more than once then you will need to replace that door lock.

We removed the front door. Where the latch is located, there was a white piece with a pin sticking out and a cross bar that was held in place by the white piece. We used a screwdriver to open a space in the white piece so that the cross bat could slip out the bottom of the white piece. Then, we could push from behind on the metal part that had the pin. The metal part rotated and released the latch. We then replaced the cross bar into the white piece. Be careful -- the solution worked to unlatch the latch, but our diswasher still doesn't close well during the wash cycle.

Hi.
Remove the screw holding the fascia and undo clips.
Here the diagram.
