Hello, I was about to watch some tv-show online when my netbook crashed. The video I was supposed to watch was loading (I had it on pause, because I wanted it to load first), when my screen went black (I think it's the sleepmodus thingy). This happens all the time because I have configured my netbook this way so it won't use too much electricity. I usually press the enter button and my screen comes back. This time, this obviously didn't happen. I had to force it to shut down by pressing the start button and then it started with the Start repair tool automatically without me doing anything. This ran about 6 hours (I'm not kidding!) before I got a second tool to try to repare things. A black screen like in MS-dos saying it was about to scan the harddrive. And now it's done scanning and it's stuck on it. I tried to start with the F-button, in safe-modus or any other modus for that matter. But it keeps coming back to the harddrive scan untill it finishes en does nothing (after the wondows logo, but it won't load windows itself). I'd really appreciate it if you somehow know how I can reboot/fix my netbook without formatting it, as I don't have a back-up. I have a Sony Vaio VPCW21S1e With kind regards, Selma Zivanovic
Please tell me whether it is chkdsk command running when you say black screen like DOS comes.if it's disk checking then let it complete and after that your system will start. If your system doesn't start check your ram.Remove one of the ram from system and then reboot your system.
Tell me if this doesn't work
hope this will work
black screen is DOS mode and yes chkdsk but you should type in chkdsk/r/f
If this checking completes or not.If this checking not completes and hangs up your system then there is sure some hardware problem in your system.
Open the back panel panel and remove the ram and clean it.Restart your system and check it works. If this doesn't work remove hard disk and clean ports and put it again in ports.Restart your system and check whether it works. If this doesn't work i would suggest you to take it service center as in this case many things has to check.
I think it was chkdsk, I tried several troubleshooting tools including disk check. But now I don't even get a F8 screen when I start, just a black screen saying my hard drive is damaged and I should contact the manufacturer. So I'm going to do that.
I would remove the ram, but I'm afraid my guarantee doesn't allow that.

Restart your computer
During the boot process you will see on the screen to press a certain key to enter setup
Press and hold that key during the boot up process to enter BIOS using the arrow keys load failsafe defaults or load optimized defaults press escape then press f10 to save to cmos to restart if this fails to fix the problem
During the boot process tap the f8 button three times this will boot into safe mode where the only things working will be your mouse and keyboard enabling you to attempt to repair your computer
you could select the option start at last known configuration that worked this will tell what file has been corrupted or missing you might be able to work your way through problem if you are unable to find a solution
restart back into safe mode you might need to select your operating system to load into safe mode
click start control panel administration tools computer management in the left panel events + to expand then system you will see all errors in right panel right click select properties this will tell you what has occurred and the time it occurred
you might use the system restore to restore your system to an earlier time
click start all programs accessories system tools you should see your system restore option
hope this helps you
Hello Brian,
Thanks a lot for your solution! I tried to do what you told me, but I'm having some problems.
I tried to get into BIOS, but I couldn't find the right keys (I think it's the F2 key when I clicked it, it only says I can load windows 7 - nothing else).
Also I did a Startup Repair tool and it says the main problem is that the systemvolume on my my drive is damaged and I should repair the filesystem (chkdsk).
I still can't get into safe mode or windows.
Any other suggestion on how to repare the damaged systemvolume file?
restart your computer repeatly tapping the F8 key to enter safe mode
you could select the last known configuration that worked
that should tell you what file what file is missing or has been corrupted or it might be a hardware issue
you could use the system restore to restore to an earlier time
click start all programs accessories system tools you should see your system restore option
or you could select to start with command prompt type in chkdsk/r/f
have no input while chkdsk utility is in progress any may further damage you hard drive and operating system
Hi Brian,
I've tried everything but to no avail. I get a black screen now when I start my computer that says: SMART Harddisc damaged/error and that I should contact Sony.
:( Thanx anyway. I think there's no solution to my problem, other than replacing the hard disc
