Have had my Maytag Performa washer for about 7 years. Has been great until now. When spinning or even agitating, high-pitched squeal/grinding noise. No rubber smell or black smoke like the others mentioned.
How do I diagnose this? Some with similar problems have said to replace the pump for about $60 and is supposedly easy; others were advised to forget it. How do I tell what is going on?
Thanks,
Karen

Turns out that I had run some shorts through that had a bunch of staples in the pocket that I had removed from my garden posts. A couple of them had wormed their way under the agitator and were causing the friction/horrible noise. I removed agitator and cleaned very well, and all better now!
I have the same issue and have checked the pump which seems to be ok. I have removed both the inner and outer tub, and the noise still persists. With the belt off the motor sounds fine, I suspect the transmission or a grinding brake but am unsure about how to verify.
