Janice, if you say the only change on your system was the installation of this game you may want to start troubleshooting by uninstalling your beloved game and retest playing cd/dvd.
if it works... your game may have been poorly made and may have affected the driver of your cd/dvd device.

is also possible your game may have come with other software (spyware/virus) that may have affected your computer. Uninstall game and run updated antivirus and antimalware software. you may want to reconsider the source of your games.

your game may have also come with other software to play cd/dvds that may have been installed and selected to be the default player of cd's and dvd's and may require especific configuration to play the cds or dvds.
to change the default program that plays dvd or cd.. go into my computer>tools>folder options>file type tab>select audio cd and click change under the detail section to change the program you open the file with. do the same for dvd.

if none of the above worked. try to revert your system to a previous date (when your devices were working) with system restore: (if using xp)
start>all programs>accessories>system tools>system restore.

Okay try this
Go to your My computer icon--right click on it
properties-->hardware-->device manager
Find ur cd/dvd drive on it
Uninstall it by right clicking it (dont get scared ur system will detect it itself in next reboot and u dont need any drivers for it)
hope it will works if there is no physical damage

Cant play DVD ROMs

you can try uninstalling the drive, by going to my computer, right click>properties>hardware tab>device manager and look down the list for cd/dvd drives, click on '+' sign and right click on your drive make and select uninstal. Restart pc and your drive will be reinstalled automatically again. If you have a cd cleaner disc run that also. Try to run the game again, although it may still not work as the drives laser seems to be out of line or simply run it's life, and a new drive is the only answer i'm afraid.

Please Insert disk?

Hi Tool4theman, I have a CD/DVD r/w drive and it only says NEC DVD +RW. That is just the text the manufacturer has embedded in the device, not the results of any diagnostics. You've mentioned what program you are playing DVDs with but what are you playing your audio CDs with and are they commercial audio CDs? Have you tried running a diagnostic on your drive? Here is a link to the Sony CD/DVD diagnostic tool. Its meant for Sony drives but I have used this successfully on other drives in the past. When prompted for a blank disk us a CD. http://sony.storagesupport.com/cdrw/diagnostics.htm#dwn Let us know how it goes and don't forget to rate the posting.
