While logged into the router, Turn on "broadcast ssid" or tell your computer exactly what the SSID is.
One form of security is to set the router not to tell other computers in wifi range what the ssid is.

Replce the wifi card from another laptop (it should be working) and check it. If it is okay then the complaint is in the wifi card. If the problem still exist the south bridge or the input/output controller chip is faulty. Consult a chiplevel technician to replace the chip.
Your Compaq V2000 has an Intel Pro Wireless 2200 BG wireles adapter. (doesn't support N, but that's not the point I think)
If your new network configuration is based on WPA/WPA2 encyption, this adapter has some known problems to establish a connection. It works great with WEP, but not so well with WPA. Sometimes the issue can be solved by installing the latest versions of drivers and software for the wireless adapter. If it still doesn't work, a known workaround is to disable via device manager all other network adapters in the computer (ethernet adapter), leaving active only the Intel Pro 2200 wireless adapter.
If you reformatted your drive you need to make sure you have all of the applicable drivers. They are not always included with the xp restore disk.
In particular you need to have the utility for your network card. You can't set up a network until you can access the internet either wirelessly or through a modem.
