u need to have a modem that can send receive fax, then install faxing software in computer, install dell drivers then setup modem, and send recieve program, to send fax u scan n save then use fax program to use image sometimes it may scan and send at same time? read manual with program
The first thing that I would try multiple people to ask them to fax you.Sometimes the 2 machines don't "sync".This is a toll free fax test number that I always use to check my machines..1-888-473-2963.Just write the words "FAX TEST" in large letters on a blank sheet of paper..fax it to that number...leave the line open...you should get a fax back in about a minute. If you get a fax back...your machine is fine...let me know if this was helpful....thanks.
A fax transmission is an analogue communication that was possible on a computer with the old technology of Dial up Modems, which accessed the internet by dialling like a landline telephone. The Broadband Modems (or Modem/Routers) in widespread use today have an 'always on' internet connection and, therefore, no dialling is involved in internet access using them.
You can send a fax by dialling out on the All-in-one printer's telephone number pad. Receiving a fax automatically requires you to have the All-in-one printer's Transmission/Reception Settings set to 'Automatic'.
This fax setup requires the printer's fax cable to plugged directly into an empty Telephone Line Socket on the ADSL filter that plugs into your Telephone Wall Socket and has inputs for your Modem (or Modem/Router) and a Telephone line. If, as is common, your ADSL Filter only has a single Telephone Line Socket and you also require a telephone to be plugged into the same socket as well as the Fax Machine component of your printer, then a Telephone Line Socket Doubler must first be plugged into the Telephone Line Socket of the ADSL Filter which then receives the Fax Line into one socket and the Telephone Line into the other. Please note that every Telephone Socket in the building sharing the same circuit/telephone number must also have an ADSL filter between it and any telephonic device (Telephone/Fax Machine/Answering Machine/Stock Control linked EPOS (Electronic Point of Sale) System/Card Payment Processing Machine, etc.), in order to enable both Computer Internet Data and Telecommunications Data to share the same line without conflict.
Your question asks whether a fax can be received "through" the computer. The above description enables your printer to send and receive faxes 'independently' of the computer while simultaneously providing the computer with printing, scanning and copying functions. For faxes to be sent and received via the computer, software is required. The simplest and most efficient of which is Efax (Electronic Fax (available from www.efax.com) and other similar software available from a variety of suppliers. This software enables the user to send any document or image stored on the computer by fax (without first having to print it) and to receive faxes, at any time, in the form of attachments to e-mails that the software opens, usually as a non-editable PDF or other similar secure Document Format. Faxing a physical document via Efax requires the user to scan the document and save it on the computer first, before sending it.
A combination of a Standalone Fax function setup using ADSL Filters and Socket Doublers + Efax gives the user optimum flexibility in sending and receiving faxes.
I hope this helps.

The A940 is not a standalone fax machine, and needs to work with your computer to send and receive faxes. Your computer needs a dialup modem installed and a connection to a phone line, and you need to have fax software installed. The printer actually only works as a scanner to input a document to be faxed, and as a printer to display a received fax. The installation CD supplied with the printer has fax software on it you can install, and other software is available online. This document from Dell (the fax section of the user's guide) may be helpful.
You cannot receive fax using this printer, because this printer doesn't support fax sending/receiving. Only fax supported printers can receive fax documents. You will know if a printer is fax support if you see a Fax button there or if you can see a numpad buttons where you can dial numbers.
The USB cable go to the printer, the USB to the PC port and the other end to the printer. The phone cable also has a PC port and printer port that hooks on.The phone cable is for FAXING and if the printer support is going to be 2 phone ports.
go to menu option and choose the option fax and set the parameter like auto receive or manual set the ring auto answer mode after certain ring. If it is in auto receiving mode it will receive the fax after the ring which you set. make sure the phone wire which you insert in fax machine getting proper dial tone and getting out going calling facility. Hope this helps. Please rate my response. Thanks. Have a good day.
Hi c_mcnair, when you install the software for you're A960 printer it also installed the Dell All-In-One Center. Within in the dell center you can change you're fax settings. To open the dell center do this, Click Start → All Programs → Dell Printers → Dell AIO Printer A960 → Dell All-In-One Center. Once opened click fax setup utility. Fax starting on page 40 in manual. Once in the fax setup utility you'll be able to change any & all fax settings. I do not have the software installed. If I did I could be more specific, step by step. (You can't find the back space button). If this refers to you're keyboard it's just above the enter key. It's the key with the arrow pointing to the left on it. ( <------ ). If you no longer have the user manual for you're Dell A960 you can download it by clicking on this link. http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/systems/a960/en/a960en.pdf You'll need Adobe reader software to read the .pdf file, AKA manual. You can download it for free. Click this link for Adobe reader. http://www.download.com/Adobe-Reader/3000-2378_4-10000062.html?hhTest=1
