My Phillips flat screen model 42fd9935/17 has started going black after playing for about 2 hours... you can still hear the sound, but the screen is black... the picture will come back after turning the tv off for a while, but eventually it starts going black-screen again... I think it might be getting too hot... the tv is 42", 10 years old and very heavy... do I need a new tv or can it be fixed at a reasonable cost?

The cost of getting this plasma fixed is not costwise compared to getting a new TV. I recommend NOT to get another plasma but get either an LCD or LED for the best quality compared with price. Plasma parts can be quite expensive especially for a 10 year old model or may not be available.

Sounds like the fl tube inverter board power is failing. All flat panel screens us thin fluorescent tubes to light the edges of the screen, and when the tubes fail either from age or due to a power issue the screen will go black.

good job christopher those capacitors are very common problem on flat screen tvs and computer monitors

The TV, most probably, the display circuit or the display itself has developed dry solder/components leaking and the TV needs attention by a qualified service technician.

Symptom:
Sound but no picture.

Cure:
Master or Slave inverter is defective.
It can be that the driver IC is defective or MOSF
inverter transformers, or 470uF 35V C
Replace driver IC BD9897FS or MOSFET's.

Common short the cover cap over the video & sound boards short out if you remove it the cap only (shield metal) it usually will fix this

I fell asleep with a DVD going.... When I woke up an hour and a half or so later, I could hear the DVD select screen playing for the movie but my screen was black. Turned the tv off still no screen....

check your video input cord could be a dfective cord are you using different audio cords or using hdmi?
