Refrigerator odor We have an estate top and bottom refrigerator made by whirlpool. Starting a few days ago, we had a bad smell in the kitchen. FYI we were without power for 4 days after hurricane ike. Last night, I cleaned out the refrigerator and freezer from top to bottom. A bad odor still comes out from the bottom/back part of the time (I think when the frig is running). The smell stops when I unplug the frig. It is better today but not solved. I also took off the cover on the back/bottom but I don't see anything. Also, we have had a couple of mice lately. I am stumped.

I understand that you are having an odor issue with your Frigidaire refrigerator. Usually odors can stem from spills or food within the refrigerator. You can clean the interior with warm soapy water or warm water and baking soda.

Another home remedy is using a pan of charcoal (do not use the one that contains lighter fluid) or kitty litter inside the bottom of the refrigerator and that can help clear out an odors within your refrigerator. I hope this has been helpful. -Matt

The drain is at the bottom inside the freezer section. It is possible a piece of something got behind a panel, or otherwise in a "hidden" spot. Or something is in the defrost water tray underneath and every time it defrosts, it gets wet and releases the odor again. Look in the drain pan by removing the kick plate (bottom grate under the doors) and look to see if anything is there. Use a few open boxes of baking soda in the fridge (to absorb odors), and wipe the inside with some vanilla extract. that combination will help with the odor. But the source of the odor needs to be removed first. It sometimes can be hard to find.

You have a freon leak. With this only being 5 years old, iot's probably worth repairing, unless you are just able to buy a new one. I would have a local tech come out and check it before tossing it. I had the same problem, but just fixed it. I have a maytag bottom freezer and when the fan blower comes on, there was a foul/stale smell that permeated the kitchen. There is no drip pan that I could remove to clean.

I just removed four screws from the back cover of the fan blower area, reached in with a small cup of organic odor remover and poured it into the drip pan just under the fan blower.

Any odor remover would work. probably vinegar or enzyme odor remover would work, too.

I now have fresh smell when the fan blower comes on.

Tim, Clean the refrigerator completely with clorox and water. Unplug and remove the rear panel in the back of refrigerator and wash the evaporator coil with this solution. Check the amount of flow to the condensate pan below. The drain line has the gel and this contaminated smell from top to bottom and you will need to insure that all the smell remaining in the drain is draining freely and decontaminated with the clorox. Do these things and wash the remaining pan below the best you can and you will be set to go.

The clicking is from your compressor relay on the side of the compressor it has eather went bad or a condenser fan motor is not running this will cause the walls to be warm if the fan is running in the back try cleaning the coils hope this helps

Clean the refrigerator thoroughly fresh food and freezer under all drawers. Then place charcoal briquettes in each 8 or 10 total. 4 or 5 in the bottom of the fresh food section. leave the for several days. If that doesnt take away the smell consider if a mouse may have gotten into a fan blade and well that can create a really bad smell.

Check your water softener(If so equipped). This can cause foul odors in the water supply if not properly balanced or maintained. Good luck!
