Briggs and Stratton are usually 4 stroke engines.
However, check to see if there are THREE receptacles for petrol/oil. Some 2 strokes have a seperate tank for 2 stroke oil so there will be three receptacles on these engines - one for petrol, one for 2 stroke oil and one for gearbox oil.
Other two strokes are like 4 stroke engines insomuch as they have only two receptacles - one for fuel and one for gearbox oil. The difference with this type of 2 stroke is that you have to mix 2 stroke oil with the petrol ( usually 1 part oil to 50 parts petrol ) before putting it in the fuel tank. This is called "premix".

Judging from what discription you are giving me I would say it is a 4 stroke, so make sure you have either sae 30 or 10/w30 oil in crankcase where it says oil and petrol (gas) in the other tank. 2StrokeJim

Briggs and Stratton always used SAE30 only grade oil for 4 strokes. Do not put oil in the gas.

Is there a safety cut-out switch when the two stroke oil runs out?

Hi,I have never herd of one before,you are just ment to keep your eye on the level,if it has run out compleatly then I would say before you try to start it again I would premix a bit of two sroke oil with the petrol in the tank,
as if it starts without the two stroke oilyou could do alot of damidge as this is the loob for the piston.

If the scooter is a Lamberetta or any other Italian scooter usually they are two stroke, to which you add two stroke oil to the petrol. on some newer model scooters they have a seperate oil bottle near the petrol tank which takes the two stroke

If it is two stroke it must have oil mixed in with it. Try pulling the cord and notice if there is any compression if not then it is the pistion and if it doesn't turn then it is seized with lack of oil.Now if it is four stroke take the plug out put it to the head and pull the cord to see if there is any spark if there is it's a fuel problem.
