Check your card that it is big enough. Also, make sure to format the card before taking any pictures in the camera you are to use it. If you do not, and it has been in another camera, corruption can occur and problems as you have stated as well. The card may not be supported by this camera. Read your manual.
Reset all settings to factory defaults.
Then set them as you wish.
If the problem continues, do more testing as follows.
Remove the battery and replace it with a fully charged battery, or recharge the battery.
Hope it works

Monitor screen can not appear photos before shooting

That's the way the D40 works. The monitor is for menus and picture review, not to show images before shooting. Nikon introduced the LiveView capablitily with the D3 and the D300, introduced after the D40. The D40 works as SLRs have worked for half a century, giving you the image through the viewfinder.

My nikon d40 is not showing live screen view nor i

I realize these aren't the answers you wanted to see, but the D40 does not have any live view capability, nor does it shoot video. Nikon intended the D40 as an entry-level dSLR, with a minimal feature set. In fact, they didn't introduce the video until the D90, introduced more than two years after the D40. The least-expensive Nikon dSLR with both of these capabilities is the D5000.

Flash witeout

Hi there, you mentioned continuous shooting right. Your mean Sequence mode? One click and 7- 12 continue image sequence wise? If its then the problem is, your camera battery is not good now. He is not able to give required power supply to you camera flash. When few snaps done after the he loss his battery power & flash power going under(-) & your camera motor going slow, that's why shutter not open and close proper time. And the final result is whiter & whiter images. Hope you understand, what i am saying. So change the battery & buy a new original battery.
Thanks & waiting for your feedback.

I have nikon d40, on continuous mode, auto, it doesn't shoot continuously. also, most of the time, it focuses but not shooting... please help.

I don't know what you are doing - mine shoots continuously with no problems. There is nothing to set other than to set the shooting mode.
I have noticed that some memory cards are so slow it doesn't allow continuous mode. I recently replaced mince ith 16G class 6 cards and they work fine.

Can not figure oput how to get LCD preview before shooting? Help?

the d40's do not have this capability. the lcd is for reviewing the pics on your mem card and for menu options. i was disapointed when i found this out too but it is a great camera.

How do I get my nikon d40 to take Black white pictures?

You CAN!!! shoot in b/w with a d40, the only thing is you can't shoot in auto mode it has to be manual , aperture priority, or shutter prioirity. Go into menu - shooting mode - optimize image. you'll find it in there.
