    anyone?

This did not fix the problem. Even when it is hooked up via the serial cable to the computer, you can turn it on but after 1.5 seconds it shuts down. So is nothing that can be done with settings or menus or updating.

I have the same problem, there is a line tht appears as well on the right side of the screen when it shuts down. I dont know whats wrong, but by searching, a ton of peple have had the same issue. it doesnt shut down in 1.5 seconds till it does the random shut off, then I cant keep it on. I did mess with the settings and changed the battery type to Lithium and it did not shut down after that, could be a coincidence, but I continue to look for the reason of this.

Yes, this problem might been caused by the launch of a new satellite earlier this year. As soon as your unit gets a fix from the new satellite, it causes this problem. Simple immediate fix: disable WAAS in the setup. Permanent fix: go to Garmin website and update your unit's software and it will fix this temporary problem. Enjoy your GPS and don't forget to come back and tell us if this fixed your problem.

Try updating your unit's internal software via the Garmin.com website.
There was a new satellite launched which has caused problems such as
this, and the update fixes it.

If this solves your problem, please come back and tell us, and rate our solution. Thank you.

My etrex legend develops a verticle black line during use and then shuts off. removing and replacing the batteries gets the gps restarted but then the problem repeats

Mine also was doing this while geocaching. I downloaded and installed the newest firmware(v3.90) using the WebUpdater from the Garmin site and it fixed the issue for me.

Screen goes blank after locating sattilites.

Accordingto Garmin, this problem can be fixed by disabling the WAAS feature in teh set up menu. There is an incompatibility between the old Garmin software and latest WAAS upgrades. Later software from Garmin is supposed to fix this problem.

Screen appears to freeze up

Try updating the unit software. A new satellite was launched this year and has been causing problems. The updates from Garmin fix it. Disable the WAAS in the meantime and see if that solves the problem in the meantime.

Will not turn on

I contacted Garmin and they had me remove the microchip inside and see if that would fix the problem. It did not. So they instructed me to send it back in for repair. They gave me a return number and then ended up replacing the unit with a new one. My unit was under a year old so it was no charge.

Garmin etrex legend

I had this problem today, updated the software, now the unit seems to be working perfectly. The unit "crashes" (single line down screen center) as soon as it get enough satelites to work with WAAS.

Go to Garmin site for software updates. Download and install the WebUpdater. Once or unit is hooked up to your computer and you have internet access, the software will download and update your GPS with the latest software fixes. I had software Version 3.7. For the Legend, Version 3.9 fixes the problems with WAAS.
