Pentax Z-70 mirror is stuck

I got the camera for free because mirror was stuck in upward position. I tried replacing battery pack but mirror didn't automatically fall down. I tried taking a few shots without film and shutter worked as a charm. Is there any hope for this little Pentax

SOURCE: I have an old Asahi Pentax, release lever and shutter are stuck.

The Pentax is a easy fix, maybe.. If you feel comfortable removing the bottom cover, then remove the 3 cross point screws. The battery, if installed will be loose. Looking at the bottom section of the camera, locate the tripod socket. On on side is the battery compartment, the other an L shaped lever. Under the L shaped lever is a brass plate with a slot in it. In that slot is another lever that has a spring going through the end eyelet. Move that lever toward the front of the camera until it latches on the L shaped lever above. Then try the release.

The first thing to try on the X700 is fresh batteries. Clean the battery cap and contacts with a pencil eraser.

SOURCE: Sticking shutter/unable to advance film

Probably. That camera has several rubber bumpers and gaskets in the mirror mechanism that have a tendency to turn into sticky gooey sludge causing the levers in the shutter and mirror mechanisms to get sluggish. The only real solution is to completely disassemble the camera to clean out the old goop and replace them with newer neoprene fittings. My suggestion would be to find a replacement body since the repair is probably going to cost between $80 to $90 and you can probebly find a good used body for less than that.

SOURCE: film won't advance

Pentax ME Super was one of my favorite camera, small and clean shutter release. But it has been about 25 years since it was manufactured. They happen to use rubber break within shutter unit and as any rubbers, it started to deteriorate and melt between the shutter-blades. This prevents the complete cycle of the shutter and jams the winding. You may be able to unjam the winding but eventually you have to overhaul the shutter unit. Overhaul charge is around $100 in US repair market. -James

SOURCE: the mirror on my pentax pz1 (film) camera is stuck

Mirror lockup often occurs if the batteries are flat.

Try new batteries first and if the problem remains please report back for further options.

Unless you have experience repairing cameras, this is not a DIY fix. Take your camera to a reputable camera shop and have a trained professional look at it.

The problem with the mirror is 1 of 3 things, 1 mirror box is distorted from being dropped, 2 mirror motor striped teeth or burnt out, 3 batteries. Try fresh good quality batteries first, that fixes lots of problems in cameras. if its the mirror box or motor then its time to go camera shopping.
This camera came out in 1997 so is an old model. It was brought out as a very basic model, no frills. 1 hour of a camera tech's time is worth double what the camera is worth so dont even bother getting it repaired.

Are your battery contacts clean ? ? Can you open the film area and see if the mirror is up ? If the mirror is up, then you have problems. The camera did not go throught it's shutter program and the mirror has not been released to go down. Major repair that is way more expensive then a replacement camera. Same with the battery, something inside is not turning off (completing the shutter function) You can go with film or digital as the Pentax lenses work with both. If you change to Pentax (Ricoh ownes it now) digital, the old film flashes will not work. Need a newer digital Pentax flash for a Pentax digital camera.

Can't see through viewfinder

That will happen if the mirror is stuck in the up position and so blocking any light from entering the viewfinder.

Mirror lock-up is very common on 35mm SLR's like yours where the shutter is entirely electronically controlled and in most cases it's cured simply by fitting new batteries.

If this resolves your problem then please rate my answer, if not then add a comment instead to confirm that the batteries have been replaced and I'll try further options.

Is my ME Super toast?

It doesn't need batteries to shoot. You can use it on manual without batteries, but the exposure meter won't work (if you know what you're doing you can go by). But the stuck mirror should be fixed. It could be just plain dirty/rusty/bent etc.
The advance lever might be gone since it won't 'click'. A professional shop can fix it, but the one you tried doesn't sound very professional...

Slr mirror is stuck. remove the lens and try to slightly move the mirror up and down ( but not forcing it to move!)and pushing the shutter switch. Try also applying lighter fluid in the mechanism while operating or shooting, fluid will help loosen the stucked mechanism.

Pentax MX Mirror Stuck In Up Position

This is a result of the linkage from the shutter release button being out of adjustment. It is a mechanical fault that can be repaired very easily.
