Picture Problems: Snow, color, lines

Hello. My Sony Projection tv has started to have problems. There are black/white horizontal lines on SECTIONS of picture, like part of a face, or white curtains in the background. It does this for awhile, then the color gets really bright and picture is distorted for awhile, like ghosting, then it snaps back to a regular picture but with horizontal black and white lines going through parts of the picture. These lines move with the items they are "in".

The most likely cause is shorted convergence chips and possibly a few pico fuses.

These sets need to have all three colors - RED - BLUE - GREEN - lined up correctly on the screen in order for the picture to look normal. This is called convergence.

When its out of alignment the video will look 3-D, wavy, distorted, etc. Most of the time you just need to adjust your convergence in the menu. If you cannot adjust it in the menu - then your convergence is broken and needs to be repaired. Convergence problems are very common on all Projection TV sets including Sony,Samsung,JVC,Philip Magnavox,Panasonic,Akai,PioneerPicture Problems: Snow, color, lines - 2_bing.gif Hitachi,Mitsubishi,Zenith and others.
You can get a convergenece repair kit with instructions from the links below.

Here are some of the most common problems with these sets...

Problem #1) Convergence

Yours may have one or more of the following symptoms...

*Screen Looks 3-D
*Colors wont align
*Screen may look distorted or warped
*No Audio/Video - TV Shuts down - May also make a constant chirping sound

Problem #2

Red horizontal curvy lines

You need to turn the voltage on the red tube down slightly, also you would need to adjust focus to compensate for the lower voltage to the red tube. On the left and right bottom side of speaker cover are two round covers, take them out and there are 2 1/4" hex screws take them out carefully take cover off, there is another service cover same hex screws remove. You will see the focus block on the right side, tubes are labled on block. 2 knobs for each tube. Make voltage adjustments while tv is on a black screen, then for focus, turn color all the way off in the menu, and adjust focus until it looks right in black and white. These adjustments should only be very small; if alot of adjustment is needed, you may have other issues.

Red bowed horizontal lines

Projection sets have two very common problems outlined below.

The first common problem is convergence

These sets need to have all three colors - RED - BLUE - GREEN - lined up correctly on the screen in order for the picture to look normal. This is called convergence.

When its out of alignment the video will look 3-D, wavy, distorted, etc. The TV can also shut down when the convergence starts to fail.

Most of the time you just need to adjust your convergence in the menu. If you cannot adjust it in the menu - then your convergence is broken and needs to be repaired.

Convergence problems are very common on all Projection TV sets including Sony, Samsung,JVC,Philip Magnavox,Panasonic,Akai,Pioneer, Hitachi,Mitsubishi,Zenith, RCA and others.
