Out of the blue, the cursor (pointer) either locked up or had a mind of its own on where to move. When booted in safe mode it performed correctly. I thought I had a virus, but after spending several days trying to resolve the issue I gave up and restored my system. After a complete system restore, the cursor still performed in an erratic fashion. By chance I removed the battery and pluged in AC power and everything performed normally.
This is on an Acer Aspire 3004LCi notebook running Windows Home XP. Also, the battery shipped with the new laptop had very poor battery life.
Thanks for the info, but it didn't work. As soon as the battery is put back in, the pointing device (cursor) has a mind of its own and won't move or slighlty moves and locks up. As soon as the battery is removed everything works fine. I've been in the business over 40 years and have never seen a battery make a pointing device perform like this.
But like I said, the battery that came with my Aspire 3004LCi had very poor battery life lasting no more then 20 to 35 minutes. I believe a new battery is in order to correct this issue.

Something might be corrupted, like OS or application. There are too many variables, but try booting into Safe Mode by pressing F8 during boot and using System Restore. There you can choose a date to roll back prior to problem. You may have to try a few dates. Plus you can uninstall any programs that may have caused the problem.
Make sure you don't have the mouse pad locked. Normally there is a
button at the top in the middle of the mouse pad that locks or unlocks
it. Some models will have you to tap twice in the upper left corner of
the touch pad to toggle it from locked to unlocked. Other will have you
to Press and Hold the Alt Key or the FN function key located at the
lower left portion of the keyboard then hit the key that toggles the
touchpad. The key that toggles the touchpad will have the icon of a
finger pointing at a square which represents the touchpad.
Try going into the Touchpad settings to make sure you have the
Defaults set. Click Start/Control Panel and look for Mouse or Touchpad.
Reinstall the touchpad drivers.
Get online
and got to www.google.com In the google search box type: "Samsung
Support" (without the quotes and put your manufacturer name before Support).
Look for downloads and drivers. Enter your model number and operating
system when requested. Download and install the drivers.
Maybe your touchpad mouse has been hijacked by a virus or infection.
Get into safe mode and see how it functions.
Turn off the computer, then hit the power button to turn it
back on and immediately start hitting the F8 key repeatedly until you see SAFE
MODE. Take the Safe Mode option and let it boot up. Safe Mode will look
different to you, the screen will be darker and the icons bigger, this is
normal.
If the cursor behaves in Safe Mode repeat the process to boot into safe
mode, but this time select Safe Mode With Networking (this will give you
internet connectivity). When it boots up, open your internet browser
and download and install MalwareBytes.
Go to www.google.com and in the search box type:
"Download cnet Malwarebytes" (without the quotes). Download and
install malwarebytes from the sites download.cnet/malwarebytes. When the
site opens up click on the Green Download button on the left. Do not
click the Red Download button, that's junk. When it finishes installing the Gui
Interface will open up with an offer to Accept a Trial Version or
Decline. CLICK DECLINE you want the totally free version. Run a
QUICK SCAN. As it scans, if it finds infections the number will be in
red. When it finishes scanning, click SHOW RESULTS. A notepad text
document will open up showing you the results. You can close the text
document and go back to the Gui Interface where you will click REMOVE SELECTED
RESULTS. The objects will already be selected for you. When it
finishes removing the objects click ok and it will sometimes reboot your
machine.
Make sure there is not a lock on the top middle of the touchpad that you can press to toggle the lock/unlock. if so, press it. Otherwise I would try booting up in safe mode and see if the cursor locks.
No display? but you have an mouse cursor showing? So you must have an display and it is locking on startup of the OS. Do you have an bootable cd? If not lets try to start it up in safe mode.. 1: power down system 2: on power up hit the F8 key keep taping it till you get display saying startup in safe mode. 3: start up in safe mode no network. 4: if it starts up to an desktop then its an driver or software which you have installed causing normal startup to stop. If it doesn't start in safe mode we will have to boot to an OS CD. Let me know how these first steps go..
This happens to me also. Check whether the touchpad is enabled (laptops do have an option of enabling / disabling the touchpad). Secondly, you can try reinstalling the touchpad driver. Uninstall and then re-install the driver. Re-boot the system. Try using the touchpad.
have you tried going to safe mode? or safe mode with networking? you can also try to run chkdsk /r on the recovery console,to do this, insert your xp cd,restart, press f12 to go to the boot menu, choose cd/dvd rom, press any key to boot to cd,after loading, press R for repair to go to recovery console, choose number 1 for the windows installation folder, leave password blank, type chkdsk /r press enter, this will take a while, after that type fixboot, press enter, continue, press Y,you might also try to run diagnostics first by pressing FN and Power button at the same time while its off,if it cant find the diagnostic partitition, you can boot to your resource cd or drivers and utilities cd
Try putting the computer into safe mode by shutting down the computer. Turn the computer back on. At beginning of the boot process press and hold the f8 button and select safe mode from the menu.
When the safe mode is done booting up, try moving the mouse around. If it works, restart the the computer under normal Windows startup procedures.
You should try starting in safe mode. Shut down the computer completely - switch of - wait a minute and then switch on...
To get into the Windows XP Safe mode, as the computer is booting press and hold your "F8 Key" which should bring up the Windows Advanced Options Menu . Use your arrow keys to move to "Safe Mode" and press your Enter key.
Once you are in safe mode you shold be able to investigate the problem.
