Many people don't like the new nity interfaced that was first introduced in Ubuntu 11.04 but luckily, many other linux distro are based on ubuntu so instead of going back to either 10.10 or 10.04, I suggest you take a look at elementary OS (www.elementaryos.org), linux mint (www.linuxmint.com), lubuntu (www.lubuntu.net) or xubuntu (www.xubuntu.org).
All these are operating system built on ubuntu so you will be familiar with how it all works but you won't have to deal with the Unty interface you don't like from Ubuntu 11.10.

Im unable to update my version of ubuntu thru auto update as it says my version is not supported anymore what can i do to update my system?

Welcome to FixYa.
You have to download and re-install the latest version of Ubuntu. Download from this link http://www.ubuntu.com/download/ubuntu/download
Make sure to back up all your important files before doing the re-installation.
Ubuntu is a FREE Operating System, though they are trying very hard to support its users, it does not guarantee a total complete auto support like automatic updates. You have to re-install everything when new release is available.

If i install ubuntu on my laptop? does it it erase or change the programs that already installed? do i need to create back up?

if you are speaking about windows, the answer is no, you can install Ubuntu and keep your windows untouched, if you try installing Ubuntu you will find an option of running both windows and Ubuntu.

Can only quit on Ubuntu installation step 6 of 7.

If you quit the installation ubuntu won't work. Perhaps I don't understand what your saying, but try going through the entire installation proccess (which will wipe the files of the old ubuntu piece of the hard drive).

I just installed ubuntu installed mp3 kodec

When you start your pc just after it listed your hardware, before starting the grub graphic of Ubuntu, press the esc key, and change your kernel using the arrow on your keyboard, to the previous kernel, as fare as i remember one the kernel was having a bug, just before i upgraded to Ubuntu intrepid 8.10, if you did not do the full upgrade, then go to http://www.ubuntu-unleashed.com/ and search for the latest kernel, my best advice is go to http://www.ubuntu.com/getubuntu/upgrading and follow the steps base on your Ubuntu os, any problem come back to me [email protected]
