Kenmore 70 series washer making knocking noise when spinning. It washes the clothes fine but it just started making these horrible knocking noises when it spins and agitates. I tried holding the agitator while it was spinning to see if that would stop the noise and it didn't.

Check to see that the springs that hold the tub assembly to the frame are attached. Sounds like one may have come off on the machine.

yeah, Sears doesn't know what they're talking about. All the springs are still attached. Any other ideas?

One of the brake pads may be hanging up and causing the basket to wobble.
Look at page 13 of the manual below. It shows you the location of the brake pads.

I took it apart, the springs are fine. Just in case, I ran a short cycle load of just a couple of tee shirts. It's now making a horrible noise when it's draining and it no longer spins during the spin cycle. It agitates, but won't do the spin dry cycle, just this horrible groaning noise.

Noise at the very end of spin cycle - Washer KENMORE 70 series

Hi Susan,
This can be so many things, could be because the clutch assembly might be worn out but also an item caught in the seal or between the drum and the casing or an unbalanced load.
Thanks

Kenmore Series 70 washer, does not spin out the clothes like it used to. Makes a noise it didn't used to. Sounds like a dryer that has clothes with metal buttons on it.

it could be the break above the transmission. it engages what looks like break shoes when the machine is not spinning. if these are worn down to the rivets then it will make this noise. it requires a special tool to replace.0de7df9.jpg

Kenmore Washing Machine 70 series

You most likely have a broken coupler between the motor and gearcase.
You can buy the part for about $10 or have someone come out and replace it for about $150-200.
If you will post the complete model number from the the washer so I can see which style cabinet you have, I will try to walk you through the repair. It isn't very complicated if you are handy with home repairs.
With the age of the machine it probably just needs a coupler, but it could also have a problem in the transmission or basket drive that has caused the failure.
