Scan light the scan light moves across the scanning bed, but it's not lit. Does that mean it needs to be replaced? Printer prints from programs just fine. But it doesn't scan or copy, because the scan light isn't lit.

Replace Scan head mechanism(while scanning or copying there is a part called scan head moves right to left with light fails to move due to mechanism breakage). For reaching this unit you need to remove flat bed glass. Pl see the snap shot for easy identification:SCAN HEAD:

Its not drivers issue, hard ware issue.. Scanner assm faulty,replace it..For tech guys:Open flat bed glass, remove scanner assm clean inside reflector glass with ear buds & adf glass especially at home position.. lubricate on rail refix it back.. check it..

programs we put to macbooks are supposed to be easy to use. you have to first check the printer itself when you turn it on, uncover the scan bed and see if its moving or flashing light the moment you power it on. or when you press the scan button. if that scan thing inside the scan bed is not responding at all when you press the scan button, it means that the scan mechanism (bulb) is broken or needs replacing or the printer itself needs replacing. if that hp dj is new and if you're in the usa you can have it replaced by hp, just call 800-HP invent for tech support.

Is this a new scanner? If so, most scanners come "locked".
Make sure you consult your user manual and remove the lock (usually by turning a knob/handle/switch under the hood somewhere).

If this has scanned before, watch the scanner bed as you try to scan. If the light does not coarse the entire scanner bed, then the lock may have become re-enabled... or the motor could have come off track. Sometimes this can be fixed by manually adjusting things inside (be careful! as this could really damage your scanner).

If the light does move entirely across the bed, try to re-install the software onto your computer. If you dont have the software, you can grab a copy at dell's support site.

Also, check your cables. If you are trying to scan through a network, you might try USB instead, just to make sure the scanner works. and its not a connection problem.

The connection type can be set during installation.

Check the scanner bulb - it's suppose to light up when you copy or scan. Look inside the scan bed and as you copy or scan, it should light and move across the bed.

PSC 1401 will print but it will not scan

There is probably a little switch that gets tripped when the document feeder is in correctly. This is preventing you from scanning from the glass.

verify the plug of the top part. And then in the driver, specify you want to scan films. For the blank pages, the top light doesn't moove.

I searched HP.com but they don't have anything like this on their Customer Care site (or I don't know how to search for it successfully). I'm going to take a stab at it anyway, but it's just a guess. It sounds like a mechanical problem, with the scanning arm not moving all the way across the scanning bed.

The white area of your graphic probably describes the area where the scanning arm moves. I know the light is bright, but have you tried running a scan with the lid up, so you can see how far the scan actually moves?

Assuming this is the correct problem, your only option would be to have the device serviced so the fault can be repaired. If it's under warranty, that should work out OK. If not, you have to balance the cost of a repair against replacing the entire All-in-One unit.
