To Enable or Disable the function key behavior,
You have customize settings in the system BIOS
Which laptop brand are you using that can help give more insight to resolution in your case

if its Dell, then reboot machine and keep tapping f2 to get into BIOS
it its HP, then reboot and keep tapping f10 key repeatedly to get into BIOS settings
Check it in BIOS and address the concerns

SOURCE: Print Screen Function

On the top row, on the right hand side, second from the left, there should be a Print Screen key (Print Screen / SysRq). Just press that key once - it should give you a PrintScreen.

SOURCE: fn key on dell inspiron 1501 keyboard not working

Sounds like your number lock is on. Find the key with blue lettering that says 'Num Lk' (or something very similar). Press Fn and that key, and your number lock will be turned off and your keys will go back to normal.

Hope this helps.

My function key cannot control the brightness of my laptop

Are you pressing the 'Fn' key (usually blue lettering) to the left of the space bar before trying the function key for brightness?

Laptop function keys are either set to function as regular function keys or as system specific function keys, like volume and brightness control, when the system starts up. When you hold the Fn key, it makes that key do 'the other' function. These settings can be changed in the BIOS, of EFI settings. Though changing them is easy, you may want a semi-tech-savy friend to help the first time.

All the best to you,

I have an Asus laptop Pro50G - the keyboard has numbers associated with certain letters e.g. J = 1 when using the function key. this morning after booting up, When I press these keys, instead of getting...

If there is a key on your keyboard that has the Fn key inside a lock icon, press Fn and that key and see if that unlocks the Fn key. You can also try pressing it normally, since your Fn key seems to have its own Fn-lock kind of setting.

If you dont have that kind of a key on your keyboard, this could be caused by an option in the BIOS. When booting up press the F2 key or whichever key your computer uses to open the BIOS. Once in the BIOS, look for an option that allows you to change the Fn key from a hotkey to something else, such as legacy.

I have dell inspiron 15r ( n5010 ) this fn key are not working

The default behaviour of the Fn Key of Dell Inspiron n5010 is as Multimedia Controls, which can be changed from the BIOS by setting the behaviour of the FN Key as Function.
To do so: -
1. Restart the laptop and Press F2 to enter into BIOS Settings.
2. Locate Fn Key option and set it for Functions

Hope it helps! Good Luck!

I need to know what the keys f1-f12 keys usage.

The uses for the function (f1-f12) keys varies based on which program you have open at the time. Different programs use them for different things.

However, your computer also has some default uses for these keys when combined with pressing the fn (function) key.

fn + f1 locks computer

fn + f2 changes our power use profile

fn + f3 puts the computer to sleep

fn + f4 puts the computer into hibernation mode

fn + f5 changes the display/output mode

fn + f6 decreases the screen brightness

fn + f7 increases the screen brightness

fn + f8 enables/disables wireless connections

fn + f9 enables/disables the touch pad

fn + f10 turns the cursor overlay on/off

fn + f11 turns the numeric overlay on/off

fn + f12 turns scroll lock on/off

What is the fn key

The fn key is the function key. I am sure that helps a ton. The fn key works like a shift key, changing the buttons marked fn, like volume, screen brightness, etc. The use is that you press and hold the function key, and press teh function button and then release both.
Common uses are to turn off the mousepad, while typing, and to set screen brightness while under battery....

Dear Friend,
Have you try another combination of function key?, if it doesn't work it means that the touch pad FN key is missing and can be re-install by going to the Asus download web-page:

and select your model number as well as the operating system.

Good Luck!

Cat sat on laptop changed screen brightness. its to dark how do i brighten monitor

There is a master function key that you hold down while tapping another function located on the keyboard. This all depends on the model of laptop. Next time try to giva a little more info like make and model, which is located on the bottom. The function key or Fn key is usually located on the keyboard near the Alt and Control key lower left. while holding this key down, you tap the corresponding brightness key on the number of the keyboard, some times the brightness is on the 4 arrows on the right side of the keyboard...sometimes they are the numbers 6 or 7 look for what appears to be a symbol that looks like the sun or a light. Hold down Fn and tap the key that brightens the display.
