Yes I would for shure start with the impeller, remember the rubber fins break off and will lodge at the beginning of the intercooler so you gotta pull the hose and look for debree.
The new impeller should come with new gasket, so just remember to scrape all of old gasket off cover plate and housing. A little trick is to put dawn soap on new imjpeller so goes in smooth and doesn't over heat on initial start up. Good Luck Aloha.

My smaller johnson had a pickup tube in the housing. With your alarm you only know when it is too hot. You do not know how close you are to setting the alarm at full throttle; it can be running hotter than it should then too. I would drop the lower unit, pull the sending unit and try to force water through the sending unit hole. This should backflush the head. Backflush the impeller housing too.

is it carbureted or fuel injected? are your warning horns working? if it iscarbureted then a few easy test can be done to find out. if its fuel injected then its a little harder but not impossible.(1) check compression. without the year model I'm giving you a average numbers. all cylinders need to be over 100 lbs and equal each other within 5 lbs.(2) check spark. use a spark gap tester all cylinders should jump a half inch gap. if you have good compression and good spark fuel is the problem nine times out of ten. clean fuel lines replace primer bulb and replace all fuel filters. Yamaha has a gravity filter under the engine coul. take it to the lake if no improvement. clean carbs. same test to be and fuel system service used of fuel injected engines. if no improvement in engine preformance then you will have to take it to a dealer to test with computer.

Although water is seen thru the tell tail hole, your engine is overheating. When were the thermostats replaced last? Water pump impeller may also be fatigued, and not pumping enough at high RPM's.
