Yes, the wheel has two cables (one is normal and other a ribbon cable) that go to the DMD unit; if wheel does not turn at proper speed or not at all the set detects this and will not fire lamp up.
It is usually fairly easy to remove the lamp and look at the wheel (see attached photo) to see if it is shattered or missing pieces.
You Tube does have video instructions for replacing these in most models and if just the wheel it is worth fixing.
Also note the high pitched or grinding sound is usually a dead give away the wheel is the problem.

Thanks..you just changed my mind. I was going to toss it out but now I will fix it..just need to locate a color wheel online..
