Turntable turns, but there's no sound.

It is typically the belt that connects the motor to the platter fails..
Usually to inspect the rubber pad on the platter lifts up and the belt is visible, Install a replacement belt and then using the opening pull the belt up and over the motor.

The trick is finding the right belt. Measure the length of yours and order over internet . Next trick is to remove the platter. There is usually a snap ring more like a wire that keeps the platter from coming off. With a pointed tool slip the took under the wire and carefully pull the retaining ring up.

Some turntables use a direct drive. These usually have the problem of the rubber drive wheel gets hard and the turntable is slow. Just stopping is more likely a belt. It is possible the belt has simply come off and in that case reinstalling may work.

If the turntable's cartridge/needle are "magnetic", you need an amplifier with a "PHONO" input. Most new amplifiers do NOT have one, as that stopped when CDs began replacing LPs decades ago. Since the reemergence of LPs, some expensive amps have added a PHONO input again. Only really cheap turntables have CERAMIC cartridge/needles (usually under $100), which work fine with any amplifier input but are of a much lower quality than magnetic. Places like Radio Shack and The Source sell inexpensive Pre-amplifiers for this task of increasing the sound level and correcting the frequency response to RIAA standards. The latest turntable I bought had a Preamplifier built in plus a USB connection for converting LPs to Digital.

Hi, you need to connect the turntable to your amp via a phono input connection. If no phono input available then a pre amp needs to be used between turntable and amp to up the signal. Cheers John. [email protected]

is your surround system has a phono input? because most of the turntable can only work with the unit that has a phono input, phono input has a a built-in pre-amp. so if you're only hooking your turntable to an ordinary input then this might be the case, you won't hear any sound or sometimes weak sound.

The turntable has a USB port and corresponding EZ Vinyl software that lets you monitor the output of the turntable. Then you can connect the computer sound card to speakers to hear what is playing.

If yours is not set to be off via the control panel, and it won't rotate or it sounds like it's grinding, etc., you may have a bad motor or plastic coupler.

either the cartridge is bad in the phonograph tone arm.  Or the pre-amp in the stereo is bad...remember that the turntable is the only accessory that uses the pre-amp input on the stereo.  I'm betting the pre-amp is bad.

Hi Tim,

You probaably do not have a phono input on the digital surround amp you are using. Your sound is bad for 2 reasons

1. Your Turn Table has low output level,about 100 times less than a CD player.
   
2. You need RIAA equalisation to reduce the treble and boost the bass. This is for replaaying any modern vinyl or LP's

You can get an outboard preamp that matches the output of your T/T to suit the normal aux input on todays digital surround amp.
