Mitsubishi WS-55511 55" Rear Projection Television Logo
Anonymous Posted on Oct 06, 2011

I replaced the Convergence chip on my WS55511, and now the colors align properly, so there isn't a convergence problem. But the picture still isn't right. The colors shift towards red in the middle of the screen and green on the right and left sides. Adjusting the "color" and "tint" video settings seems to have no effect at all. Any Ideas what could cause this?

I had more time to look into this today, and the problem is only on the Green lamp. It does project over the whole screen, but the intensity in the middle is extremely low and everything is discolored, and the intensity on the edges is so high that everything is tinted green.

I also sometimes get an error when I turn it on that says "Check connections or power. The connections for RGBHV or YPrPb... ... be invalid"
(The error runs off of the screen so I don't know what the rest says)
I don't know what that means, but it probably is related to the problem.

Does anybody know if this is a problem with the circuitry, or with the green crt?

You have your input R G B / component wires hooked up incorrectly. The tv is detecting that and letting you know. disconnect and redo observe the color matching.

Good Morning lets review a couple things . if you go into the menu and turn the color down is the screen a good black and white color uniformly across the screen ? if it is then i would look at you should look at your RGB cable hook up to see if you have them reversed or in the wrong jack .

Got new STK392-040 chips and picture is still distorted. Manual convergence still won't alligne all colors.

the 183 is entry into the tech menu===you need to test all the low value resistors around the convergence chips(only 6 or 8) and they will read low and a resistor with NO reading may be your problem.

I thought i might need a lamp for my mitsubishi tv--model VS 60607 when my tv is fuzzy when turned on.should i simply replace the lamp or is there something else i should try? thank you!

This TV is a rear projection television and does not have a lamp. It has three CRT color guns (Red, Blue, and Green). You have a convergence issue (the red, blue and green color guns aren't aligned properly) and it doesn't sound like a very big one. You should be able to adjust this through the CONVERGENCE Menu in ADVANCED SETTINGS.
More details can be found in your manual, here. The model number isn't exactly the same but I'm sure the process is identical or really close. The other option would be a bad IC (integrated circuit) for the convergence control. This is unlikely unless your picture looks something like this: captainhawk1_15.jpg

The screen shows a picture that resembles a film negative. No colors are distinquishable. Replacing the lamp did not solve the problem.

The TV's convergence is out of alignment, because the colors are out of focus, thus the colorless picture. Try replacing the STK convergence chips. Check online for the correct STK chips for your Sony model.

Picture is no longer working properly. Picture is blurry and colors are all wrong. Ghost image. Happened all at once not gradually. What needs fixed mitsubishi 65" medallion series. appox 7 yrs old

Your Convergence ICs have failed. It is very common on rear projections. The solution is to replace the STK chips, check fuses and the resistors next to the STK chips. Replace as necessary and re-align via the service menu. It is about a $300 repair at a tv service center. You will need the service manual if you decide to do this yourself.

Try This:
When you notice the symptons Use this simple test to verify.
Go to the users menu on the tv.
Look for the converge option probably under setup or video setting. Converge is short for convergence to align the red and blue colors to the green color.

If you cannot move the red either horizontal or vertical, then the STK chip has failed for red section.
If you cannot move the blue either horizontal or vertical, then the STK chip has failed for the blue section.

If you can move both in each direction then the problem is something else.

Note if one STK chip fails, you replace both regardless.

My 53UWX10B has a picture problem. Picture is blue and yellow and the yellow is offset to one side a couple of inches. Gives a "ghost" image.

If the picture is 3d looking in some way----it is a convergence problem; many of these sets have "magic focus" and if it will not correct the problem the two convergence chips need to be replaced---this model should use either STK-392-110 OR -150 CHIPS.

This can be a do it yourself repair if you have some skill and total parts cost on Ebay would be under 25 dollars.

Let me know your skill level here and I will instruct you how to do the fix.

Double image on picture model # ws55511

These sets need to have all three colors - RED - BLUE - GREEN - lined up correctly on the screen in order for the picture to look normal. This is called convergence.

When its out of alignment the video will look 3-D, wavy, distorted, etc. Most of the time you just need to adjust your convergence in the menu. If you cannot adjust it in the menu - then your convergence is broken and needs to be repaired. Convergence problems are very common on all Projection TV sets including Sony, Samsung,JVC,Philip Magnavox,Panasonic,Akai2_bing.gif,Pioneer, Hitachi,Mitsubishi,Zenith and others.
You can get more information and a DIY convergenece repair kit with instructions from the link below.

Here are some of the most common problems with these sets...

Problem #1) Convergence

Yours may have one or more of the following symptoms...

*Screen Looks 3-D
*Colors wont align
*Screen may look distorted or warped
*No Audio/Video - TV Shuts down - May also make a constant chirping sound

Problem #2 - Another common problem is dull or washed out video.

Your set may have one or more of the following symptoms....

*Dull looking picture
*White looking picture
*Halos around objects
*Red/Orange looking picture

My hitachi 60SBX72B having picture convergence problem, how to fi

Your TV most likely has one or more possible problems.

Problem #1: Convergence Chip Failure ( common problem )

Here are some of the most common symptoms and example photos of a convergence problem
  • Screen looks 3D
  • Colors don't line up
  • One or more colors can't be adjusted when using the convergence menu.
  • Screen is bowed or warped.

f0900cb.jpg
Here is a quick test....

Using your original remote go-to the tv settings then goto the convergence section.

Try to adjust the red and then the blue convergence.

You should be able to move them up, down, left, and right.

If you can't move them in all directions your convergence chips are bad and should be replaced. This is a common problem.

2c07611.pngSolution #1

You need to replace the convergence chips and convergence resistors. Check the site www.TvRepairKits.com. They have put together a kits for most models. If you don't see a kit for your set send them a quick note and they will put one together for you. Their kits include a photo instruction guide, original OEM Sanyo STK chips, convergence resistors, pico fuses, etc.

Problem #2 CRT Fluid is Cloudy

Projection TV tubes have a liquid coolant that is used to keep them from overheating. After many years the coolant in the blue and green tubes will become cloudy and cause the screen to look dull, red/orange, etc. You may even see halos around images.

Picture of a set that needs the fluid changed.

What you will need to do is replace the coolant and clean the crt. You can get a repair kit from www.TvRepairKits.com that includes replacement coolant, photos. instructions, etc.

Poor picture quality

The problem is probably the convergence power supply. The switching power supply chip on the convergence board will burn out, producing a rounded picture with 3 separate colors. The chip is a long, heat-sinked SIP (single-in-line package) located on the convergence board. You can find replacements on ebay.

Warped Picture, Separated colors

Each color (red, green & blue) has an amplifier IC (STK-).
When there is a convergence issue, the first step is change both
IC's for reliability. Then check for open fuses devices, usually
pico fuses.Then re-check convergence alignment.......T.
