If the device is functional but not listed under "Network Adapters" in the device manager, it may be listed under "Other devices" as an "unknown device" or ethernet adaper. I would suggest using another computer to go to support.hp.com. There type in the model of your laptop and "drivers" for a keyword. It should then take you to a support area where you can download the drivers for your network card, IF it is functional.
if your modem has an ethernet connection the drivers should be on the disk provided by the internet provider
control panel admistrive tools,computer management,device manager scroll down network adapters +expand Ethernet driver right click update driver,disable,uninstall or select properties general you can trobleshoot or driver to update,rollback or uninstall
