I am looking for a used lower unit for a 1993 40hp evinrude. I borrowed someones boat (yeah, yeah, I know) and the lower unit went out because the oil had not been changed in a while. I am trying to do the right thing and help him get the boat fixed but i do not want to pay the high price for a rebuilt one. please help!

Hello, There is no reason to pay a big price for the parts you need. All you need to do is find and orphaned gearbox from a blown-up engine.

Do a Web search for Boat Salvage or Marine Salvage yards. My local Boatyard is Checker Marine Salvage in LaSalle,Michigan. But there are many more that may be close to you.

The price for outboards is way down because of the economy. Check out Auctions or Craigslist for parts or whole engines. For example, I paid $700 for a new Johnson in 1979. I bought a similar one at a Boat shop Bankruptcy for $65. Usually the old ones hold their value because the new ones cost so much more. But now everyone is selling.
