Hello, There is no reason to pay a big price for the parts you need. All you need to do is find and orphaned gearbox from a blown-up engine.
Do a Web search for Boat Salvage or Marine Salvage yards. My local Boatyard is Checker Marine Salvage in LaSalle,Michigan. But there are many more that may be close to you.
The price for outboards is way down because of the economy. Check out Auctions or Craigslist for parts or whole engines. For example, I paid $700 for a new Johnson in 1979. I bought a similar one at a Boat shop Bankruptcy for $65. Usually the old ones hold their value because the new ones cost so much more. But now everyone is selling.
